Sam's POV

I stood there stunned as Vincent held the door open, and I saw Emmett closing the car's door behind him. His hair was messy, and his eyes were puffy and red like he had just woken up. He wore different clothes than the designer ones he usually wore when out, but he was still as handsome as ever in the long-sleeved shirt.

My feet found themselves again as our eyes met. All the worry and fear I felt just seconds ago melted away as I jumped into his arms. Emmett stumbled back, hitting the car behind him, but I couldn't help myself. His scent, warm touch, smooth skin. It all stopped the thoughts of doubt that swarmed around my head and Samual's whining for our mate.

"Don't ever do that again!" I yelled into his shoulder, trying to stop the tears.

"I'm sorry, my moon." His arms tightened around my waist as he buried his face into my neck. "I just wanted you both safe. I'm so sorry."

"Can we go home now? I just want to hold you in our bed for the rest of the night and never let you go again," I whined.

His grip tightened before finally pulling away. He looked past me but then looked down to the ground, shaking his head.

"What do you mean no?" I felt so confused. Wasn't he here to take us back home? There was no way he lost against his father. Right? "What happened?" I asked.

Emmett looked behind me again, so I turned to see everyone else on the porch. Looking back at Emmett, he held his side like he was in pain, and I could see the shame in his eyes. He wouldn't even look up at me when I touched his arm.

"As I suspected, my father had a trick up his sleeve. I nearly won, but he threatened your life and blamed me for my mother's death. I lost focus. He used my weaknesses to anger me, and I almost paid for it with my life. He stabbed me with a dragger coated in Wolf's Bane, but Markus got the poison out before it could reach my heart. It'll take a while to heal fully, but I'm alive, thanks to him." He looked over at Markus, but Markus was already walking into the house, holding Zack in his arms.

"Where the hell did he get Wolf's Bane from? No packs or witches grow it anywhere around this part of the country," Mason said behind me. "Plus, the man doesn't leave the pack house for long, so it's not like he traveled somewhere to get it."

"My father," Felix answered as he sat down on the stairs of the large front porch. "He collects rare and banned shit like that. Did the dagger have a golden handle?"

"I didn't get a look at it, but he did comment to thank Asher for the idea," Emmett said. "I wouldn't put it passed him to have seen the fox alpha for it."

"So... your father has control of the pack? What does that mean for us now?" I asked, thinking of what we needed to do.

"You'll stay here as guests in the pack house until Emmett heals," I heard Sylveah say behind us. "Come inside. We will figure out the rest tomorrow. I have dinner made, and rooms are ready."

Emmett and I waited until everyone was inside. I wanted to hold him close and tell him it was going to be okay, but his hand didn't move from his side. "How bad is it?" I said, moving closer. "I'm sure they'll have something inside to help lessen the pain."

He said nothing as he raised his shirt to show me the big black and blue mark on his side. I can't help but gasp and cover my mouth.

He looked at me after a long sigh before dropping his shirt again. "We will have to go to war to bring down my father. I can't let him be in control of the city. Sam. He was the one who hired Hunters to kill me, overthrow me, or run me out. He was the one who let the Wolf Spider and Hunters into the city under my nose and why the trackers were nowhere to be found the day you were attacked. My father was behind all that's happened to you because of me. I'm so sorry, Sam." His voice was shaking near the end. "He will stop at nothing to kill us. I have to do something."
