Emmett's POV

It seemed like yesterday when I marked Sam on this day two years ago. Trying to hold back my excitement through our sharing bond was nearly impossible as I packed up my work for the night. Lily was spending the night with Viv and Brian, and I had a great night planned for just the two of us.

Looking at the time, I hurried out the door just as I felt Sam getting closer. He was stopped at the front desk, saying hello to Beth with a smile before turning to me.

"What?" He asked through our bond link with a head tilt as our eyes locked.

"Nothing," I answered out loud as I walked towards him. "Are you ready to go?"

"Should I change first? You won't tell me where we're going so I don't know if I'm underdressed or," he pressed against my chest, slowly running his hand down my stomach, "overdressed."

Beth cleared her throat, making me peek over to see her cheeks turn all shades of red.

I chuckled, trying not to look into his eyes, or we wouldn't be making it to our dinner reservation with the waves of lust running through my thoughts. "You're fine. I promised I wouldn't make you uncomfortable again going to fancy places. I think you'll enjoy this one, however."

An eyebrow raised in question, but I grabbed his hand before he could ask any of them.

The drive was peaceful and calm. Large snowflakes fell around us as I parked the car on the street. Sam looked around, asking which place we were headed to, but I didn't get him a word as I got out and walked around to open his door.

His eyes lit up as I opened the door to the restaurant, and I could feel his awe as we walked inside and watched the chefs behind large grills putting on a show for their guests.

We were shown to our seats without having to wait in the long line, and Sam's face said it all. I knew this was the perfect place. A ball of fire startled me into looking away from him and to the large man in front of us as he began preparing the grill for our food while telling us the night specials.

Sam took longer to order than usual, but soon, the chef added our food and flipped his cooking tools in front of us. Watching Sam's reaction as he caught food in his mouth, the chef flung to him, made the whole night for me as we laughed and cheered over the rest of the customers, but we didn't care when we got a few looks.

After our stomachs were pleasantly full, we walked down the street holding hands, looking at the window displays, before stopping at a bookstore to find a book for Lily. Something Sam couldn't ever resist doing for his daughter once we learned she loved reading.

In these last two years, Lily had grown into a bright young girl. Always eager to learn new things. From knowing hardly anything but a cage, she quickly caught up to the other pups in school and even became top of her class. Aside from reading, she also loved problem-solving and Shifter history, which seemed funny because she was the first shifter born of her kind, and one day in the future, her name could be inside those books she studies nearly daily. Sam and I were so proud of her.

The chilly night air bit my nose as we walked back outside, ready to head for the car. I looked up, pausing for a moment to see the snow falling. Even though I had planned to go back to our room and mark my mate all over again, the white and darkness of the sky behind it made me think of something else. Something I promised to do for Sam when our troubled past was over but never got around to doing because of the messy aftermath of my father's destruction over the city and pack. Rebuilding trust with the humans we shared this city with. Forming alliances and trade with the shifters we saved from the hunters' lab.
