Markus's POV

I ran as fast as I could, feeling pain digging into my chest. I wanted to say it was from the worry of Sam and Lily, but I knew it wasn't the reason. I couldn't keep denying it any longer. The more I tried to cut off our bond, the stronger it seemed to grow inside me.

"Where are you, little wolf?" I yelled through our link. "I'm here. Where are you?" I looked around only to find foxes surrounding the outside of Vincent's house. Not one of the wolves fighting to protect it was the little black wolf with dark green eyes.

He wasn't answering me. The sight of my wife and daughter lying dead in front of me, just out of reach, came into my mind. Over four hundred years passed since that day, but the thought was as clear as yesterday. The fear of seeing Zack like that burned my insides. Not again. Not this time.

"Find Sam and Lily. Get them to safely," I told one of my men and took off around the grounds.

He would be something out here, not inside the house. He was on petrol somewhere in the woods. Why did I go with Emmett? I should have stayed here where the ones I cared about were, not fighting for something that meant nothing to me.

Hearing a whimper stopped my movements through the trees. A chill ran through my body as the scent of Zack's blood hit me over the others. I knew that scent all too well, and it made my fangs drop with hunger.

I followed it without a second thought to find his wolf curled on the ground by a bush. A freshly dead body was close by. Both of their blood was splattered all over, but I could hear Zack's heart beating.

"I yelled for you. Why didn't you answer me?" I felt my anger rise as I dropped to my knees beside him. "Come on, pup. Let's get you out of here." I started to pick him up, but he began yelping, causing me to flinch away. "What's wrong?" I looked around at his wounds, but nothing seemed like it was causing that much pain. That is until I looked on the other side. "Fucken hell. You know how to injure yourself, pup."

I helped him roll to his other side to find the large tree branch wedged between his lower ribs. Smart thinking not shifting back to human form. It would have torn his insides and possibly killed him.

"It... It hurts so much," I heard Zack wince in my head while a low whine left his wolf.

Petting over his ears, I couldn't see another way to do this until I pulled it out. But what if it was too close to his heart, stabbed inside a lung? Closing my eyes, I blocked out all other sounds around us, concentrating on the sound of his breathing. It was short but didn't sound labored or struggled. His heart rate was fast, but not life-threatening.

"I have to pull it out if you want to heal. Try holding still." He whined a little more as I put my hand on his side and touched the branch. "I know it hurts. Don't move."

I took a breath, got a good grab on it, and yanked it out quickly. One hand pushed on the wound as the blood began pouring out, and the other held him down as he yelped and struggled to move.

"It's okay. It's okay," I told him as he shifted back.

Shaking down to the bone, he reached out and grabbed my arm. A tear slid down his cheek. "I'm sorry. It... It happened so fast. We didn't... have time to warn the others."

"Don't be." I looked down at the wound, seeing it starting to heal, but it was too slow. "Drink this," I said, biting into my wrist. "You need to heal faster so we can get you somewhere safe."

Our eyes met before he looked down. A feeling of shame and sadness washed over me, but I knew it wasn't mine. Zack was doubting himself, shaming himself for failing. It turned me on so much. I wanted to make him forget about it by fucking his brains out. Fuck, this wasn't the time to be thinking such things.
