Emmett's POV
It was quite the deeper we got. The only sounds around us were the crickets and a few birds overhead. The sounds of the city never reached this place, despite how close it was.
Looking over at Sam, holding my hand and close by my side, he looked all around us in wonder.
"It's so beautiful here. I never knew something like this was so close to the city," he told me with a smile.
"This forest has been in my pack's care for generations, even before the city was here. The forest is where we can hunt or run free without fear of humans or hunters. I know every tree and waterfall."
He smiled and leaned more against my arm as we walked. I wanted to enjoy our peaceful moment together for as long as possible, but the sound of a bush behind us ruffling made us turn quickly.
I stepped a little in front of Sam, ready to protect him from the danger that could jump out at us. Sam's hand tightened its hold around my fingers as one of the bushes moved again. I stepped forward but stopped as a tan rabbit jumped out onto the path.
A chuckle left my lips as I smiled at the defenseless creature. Of course, my wolf side wanted to catch after it, but I was enjoying our peaceful walk to let it take over.
Turning back to Sam, I was about to continue our walk when I saw his eyes. They stared hard at the rabbit behind me, but it was a look of horror. His mouth was slightly open as he panted heavily. It was hard to read what he was thinking, but it didn't seem like he was watching the rabbit anymore. His eyes looked unmoving, and his body tensed, but at the same time, he looked in deep thought.
"Sam?" I asked, starting to get concerned.
He grabbed his head and groaned as he dropped to his knees. "Ah, I said no. Not now."
"Sam! My moon, what's wrong?" I asked as I quickly dropped to his side and pulled him in my arms.
"It's..., it's Samuel. He's trying to get out. Ahh, it hurts so much," Sam began to panic. "My... my head feels like it's splitting."
"Stop fighting him, Sam. It's okay. Let him out," I told him, pulling his face up to look at me.
His eyes were starting to waver from white to black. The brown color turned gold through his tears.
"I'm scared. I can't." He hugged me tightly. His body trembled. "What if I lose control and hurt you again?"
"I learned a little about what is happening to you. Sam, most of us can control our wolves, but a feral wolf is different. They black out when they change due to the hunger within them. The wolf averts back to the beast form. But with you, it's more than that. You and your wolf ended up separating into two because of how long you didn't shift. I mean, you say that you weren't even there when Samuel took over, right?"
"Right." He hissed again from the pain.
"But he was going to stop at nothing to protect Baxter. A normal feral wolf would have killed him or not even cared to protect him. They're all about the hunt, the kill, and the taste of meat to lessen their hunger. They don't have that human side, but you are different, Sam. Your wolf has that human side. Don't fight with him."
He looked down at the ground for a moment, still shaking in my arms. "So you think there is a change we could... have control?"
"I think so. Maybe it's a good thing you guys are separated in this way. I mean, I know it's not a good thing from what you went through, but if you look at the bright side, it could be a great thing. We just have to work at it and talk to each other. Don't hold anything in, and don't hold Samuel back like this. That's what's hurting you the most right now, fighting each other for control. It will get you both nowhere, but I'll be here with you and Samuel every step of the way."
