Sam's POV

It's been over a week since I've been here with Steven. Both Lexi and Baxter have grown almost inseparable in the past few days. We have all been learning sign language together instead of separately and eating together for nearly every meal.

Even though both Steven and Baxter included me in everything and treated me like family, I still couldn't help feeling like I didn't belong here. Like I was invading their family time so I decided I wanted to maybe find a job and try to get on my own feet for once in my life. I guess it was never too late to start trying.

"Well, if that's what you want to do Sammy I'm not going to stop you," Baxter said when I told them my plan.

Steven looked at the table a little sad. "You don't have to do any of that though Sam. The pack supports us and everything we need here. You don't have to go either. Right Baxter?"

"Of course baby but if this is what he wants to do then what can we say or do to stop that? Sam, I can talk to some members that own businesses around here and see if they're hiring. I can get you in without an ID or anything. Do you have any idea what you think you would be good at or what you want to do?"

"Not really. I mean I never really tried anything like this before so I'm not sure where to start," I admitted to him as my cheeks grew red. I knew how pathetic that sounded.

"Well how about you come out with me today? We can stop by a few places and you can look around. See what you would like to try and what doesn't speak to you. Just remember you have time to think about it and decide. No rush at all," Baxter said with a smile.

"Okay. Sounds like a good idea. Thank you so much, Baxter," I told him and got up to get into the shower to get ready to leave.

Once I was ready to go, we said goodbye and left. It was like any other day. The air was cold the deeper into fall we got but I enjoyed being outside still. I've gone on a walk almost every day this week despite the cold but it didn't bother me. It felt good and thankfully there were trails through the woods by the house so I didn't have to go far.

"Thank you for helping so much Sammy," Baxter told me as we drove into town. "You know, you could just get a job if you want and continue to live at the house with us. I know both Steven and Lexi would prefer that over you leaving."

"I know but... I just... I don't know, it's hard to explain," I told him, not sure how to word how I felt as I looked out the window.

"Well, you always have a home with us. Just remember that. Besides, it's not like you're gonna move out after the first paycheck anyway. This is just a start for something better so if you change your mind just know you're more than welcome to stay. Oh, here we are," he said, pulling into a little parking lot. "My friend Beth owns this bakery. I know she wouldn't mind us walking around in the back and looking around and she could always use an extra hand."

We stopped at a few different places before we started heading to the store since Baxter wanted to make us dinner and celebrate my decision of getting a job.

"Hey, can I ask you something?"

"What's up Sammy?"

"What started the Dark War 300 years ago?" I asked him randomly. I've always been so curious to learn more since Emmett told me but I never did get an answer and Baxter was so easy to talk to about anything that I thought maybe this was a good time to talk about it.

"The hunters did. Why?" He asked, peeking over in question.

"Yeah, I know that much and something about witches and vampires too. But that's about it," I said looking at him. "I just want to better understand it."
