Emmett's POV

"Find them now!" I yelled as I rushed over to Mason, who was back in his human form and didn't look like he was moving. "Mason!"

I pressed my ear over his chest to hear it beating, and let out a breath of air, nearly collapsing over him. I didn't know what I would do if he were dead.

"We found more hunters in a few groups around the city, but they are retreating. What do you want us to do?" someone asked as I stood up.

"Kill them all and find where that fucken vampire went," I growled as I grabbed my hair. How could this be happening again? How could I lose my mate again?

He said he wasn't going to hurt Sam, but how the hell could I trust the words of a vampire?

I ripped off my shirt and jumped into my wolf form, knowing Mason was safe and the members were taking care of him. I needed to take control of my city and find Sam myself.

Sam's POV

"I- I- I don't understand. How could I- how could this-" I stumbled over my words while Markus walked over, holding the puppy out to me by the scruff of her neck.

"Don't hold her like that! You'll hurt her," I yelled, snatching the puppy from his hand and feeling like biting him as Samuel growled.

"Woah, overprotective dad," one of the male vampires around me said with a chuckle.

"I don't... I don't understand what you mean. How is this... puppy... be my daughter?"

"Well, before we killed the hunter's reinforcements at the lab, one of them told us about her," Markus smiled as he sat on the couch.

"You were at the lab?" I asked, my fingers gently running through the puppy's fluffy white fur as she snuggled into my arms to get more comfortable. I looked around the room to see everyone watching me with a smile.

"Well, it's not like we meant to help your mate. We found out too late that you were in there again. By the time we got there, your mate was already there. We kept in the shadows and out of their way just in case before getting word of their reinforcements."

"We wanted to have fun too," another female spoke near me as she bounced around on her heels. "Plus, human blood is best warm. That's when the scared man told us about the child."

"Markus had a hard time picking between you or Lily, but knowing your mate was there to save you, we took Lily instead," another chimed in.

I shot her a mean look before the male beside her put up his hands. "We clearly weren't going to keep her. Just until the hunters were gone. They were so close to finding out the old shifter's secret that we couldn't leave her in danger. Your council can thank us later." He smirked at me before laying his head on the girl's shoulder.

"What secret?" I asked as the puppy started to get restless in my arms.

"Her wolf doesn't like shifting back too soon, so it's going to take a minute before you can meet Lily," Markus said. "But this is her wolf. Lily has yet to give her a name."

"What do you mean?"

"She was born in the same state you were in when they used your sperm to breed her mother," Markus told me. "Even though you didn't know it because of that purple shit they pumped into you, you and your wolf were split by that time. It had passed to your offspring, which makes her the first wolf in shifter history to be born split from her wolf. Well, that we know of."

My knees nearly buckled underneath me as the puppy nipped at my fingers playfully.

"This can't be real," I muttered as I put her down and looked all over the room for some hint that I was dreaming.
