Sam's POV

Samual had trouble standing on his paws. He killed more foxes and wolves than I could count, but I felt his pain. Our body had cuts and bites all over, and the last fox we killed nearly ripped our throat open.

I wasn't sure if Steven was still alive, but Lily had dragged Lexi into a spot beside an armchair in the corner. They were both safe from the scuffling of fighting and our enemies' eyes for now.

Panting heavily, Samuel's vision was beginning to waver. "Just a little longer," I told him. "They will be here soon to help." We both knew it was a lie. How could I know? It could be hours before someone came. I could die before they showed up. What if they weren't coming at all? But I was the only thing standing between them and those I cared about. We had to keep going.

Another wolf charged into the room for me. Samual looked up, but with Steven right behind us, we couldn't dodge. I felt weaker with each bite and scratch that landed. Samuel wasn't as fast as before. We landed on our back, defenseless and fighting to keep our eyes open.

The wolf's growl seemed more like a laugh as he circled us, looking for an opening to finish the job, but then a loud yelp from outside jolted the both of us. Blinking once, a man stood in the doorway. One that took me a second to recognize. A vampire from Markus's clan.

He ripped apart the wolf as if it was nothing before looking at me on the ground. Samuel growled, ready to attack. "No. He's a friend," I yelled at Samual, but he was too far in attack and protect mode to listen.

He pushed to his feet and tried to charge at the man, but somehow. I was able to take over and forced myself to shift. The pain made me cry out, stumbling into the man, but thankfully, he caught me before I could crash into the ground.

"Steven. He-help him," I told the vampire as he helped me to the ground. "Please. Where is Markus? You have to save him. Please." I panicked. Was he still saveable? Would this man even help?

"Where are the others?" was all he asked, looking around the room. "Snowball. Come on out. You did so well back there, little wolf." Looking at the man, I could see his warm smile before Lily's wolf whimpered out of the corner of the room.

"Please, help my friend over there. He doesn't have much time," I begged him again.

His dark red eyes looked down. "I was told to get you and Lily to safety. I was never told to help anyone else. Let's get out of here." He tried picking me up, but I kicked away.

"Markus would help. He will understand. Please. I'm not leaving here without them."

The vampire looked around the room one last time before rising to his feet. "It would be a shame to waste all this effect then." He walked over to Steven's motionless body.

My heart was pounding as I crawled to his side. What if it was already too late? What would I do? How would I ever face Lexi or Baxter again? Tears began clouding my vision as I grabbed Steven's hand and watched as the vampire bit into his wrist.

The blood filled his mouth and dripped down the side of his face. He wasn't drinking. "Come on, Steven. If I could do it with a gunshot to the head, you can do it too. Lexi needs you. Your mate needs you. Please, Steven. Wake up."

Seeing something move in the corner of my eye made me look up. My eyes widened to see a man standing in the doorway. His scent reminded me of Felix, making me guess he was a fox, but something made him seem stronger than the ones Samual killed so far. "Such a pity. It looks like you're too late to save him," the man said in a low voice before smiling. "Too bad your mate isn't here to save you this time, mutt."
