Sam's POV
It's been a few days since I moved into the house with Steven, Baxter, and Lexi. As promised Baxter went out the next day and bought me everything I needed for my room downstairs. Later that night, after dinner, both Steven and him left, only to return with bags of clothes for me. I didn't know what to say, I couldn't thank them both enough for doing that when they really didn't have to but I was so grateful.
Lexi and I studied sign language from the books she brought downstairs into the large living room area. Since the first day I was here she's spent most of her time down there with me and I could tell she felt more comfortable there when Baxter was home. Most of the time she would even eat her meals down there with me too.
I was still unsure as to why she was so scared around him. I was actually confused as to why because I'd never felt so safe before staying here. It's only been a few days, but I saw nothing but love and gentleness from Baxter, especially when it came to Steven.
Watching them together these last few days was a bittersweet thing for me though. They showed each other so much love and affection. It was so adorable but also made me sad at the same time because for some reason I couldn't stop myself from thinking about Emmett in those moments. What would it have been like to just walk up to Emmett and kiss him whenever I wanted to or felt him hold me from behind while teaching me how to cook as Baxter does with Steven. I wished that we never kissed that night so that I wouldn't remember how that made my body feel.
Lexi poked my cheek making me jump a little as I snapped my eyes up.
She used her hands to slowly ask what was wrong.
"Nothing. Thinking," I signed back and then looked down at the book I was looking at before getting lost in my own thoughts.
She tapped my arm again, making me look over at her again. "A.B.O.U.T?" She spelled out each letter after thinking about it but I remembered seeing the sign for that word earlier and flipped back a few pages before finding it.
I held one hand out like it was shown in the picture and with my other hand, I circled my pointer finger around it and said the word for her. "About."
She nodded and did the same motion I did, asking me again with the right sign this time.
"I will tell you when you tell me about," I said out loud but then signed each letter to spell out Baxter's name.
She looked at me for a moment before looking down. Using both hands she brought them up to her chest, closed, and opened them both at the same time, widening her eyes.
"I don't know that one," I admitted to her before watching her spell out the 'scared' for me and making the sign for it again.
"Why?" I asked while using my hand at the same time. I took her hand in mine and spoke with just my words this time. "It's safe here Lexi. Maybe it's time to let down your guard just a little. You see how happy Steven is, why can't you let yourself feel happy too?"
She let out a sigh and sat up looking around for a moment. Before I could ask what she was looking for, she stood and walked over to grab the notebook and pen I was using to make a cheat sheet of the signs I was having trouble with. I watched as she struggled to write something down and then handed me to paper, not meeting my eye.
"Last time I felt safe and Steven was happy the bad people started to beat me. Their wolf friends would beat me too when Steven wasn't home for the night. Baxter is a wolf. If I feel safe and Steven is happy, then he will hurt me when Steven isn't around like they did." The paper wrote.
I looked back up at her and I could tell she was fighting tears while looking at the book that was closest to her. I took her hand in mine and pulled her down with me on the small couch.
