Emmett's POV
I sat in my office, tapping my finger against the hard oak wood desk, and looked at my phone. The doctor called to tell me he was letting Sam go later today since his arm was fully healed.
I know Sam told me he was human but there had to be more to it than that. I didn't smell any trace of shifter or magic on him when I smelled him as he slept. I even had Mason, one of my betas, double-check just to make sure because all I could truly smell was the delicious scent of him that made me want to devour him the closer I got. But even Mason didn't smell anything off.
Not all shifts had the ability to regenerate like we did but most of them did and I knew of a spell that witches could cast to speed the healing process but no one else was in the room without me here. No one could have slipped him vampire's blood either. I would have smelled that out before they came too close to him. So all of that led me to one question, what kind of human could heal like that?
My thoughts were broken as I heard a knock at the door before Luke, the leader of my tracker team, walked in. "My alpha, we are ready to go whenever you are," he told me as he stood there dressed in normal street clothes with his blond hair hanging down so he would be able to blend in with the crowds better.
"We better leave now then."

I looked over the edge of the hospital building as me, Mason and Brian stood on the roof and waited. Luke and his trackers stood on the rooftops across the street or hidden on the crowded sidewalks watching the entrance. The doctor just called and told me he told Sam he was free to go and was getting his papers ready but I had a feeling he wasn't going to wait for those.
Not long after that thought, Sam walked out alone and without them in hand. I smiled a little at how cute he looked in that big fluffy coat while Mason called Luke.
"That's him. Yes, blue coat. Are the trackers working? ... Good. Do they have his scent from the bloody clothes? ... Okay. Keep us updated," he ordered them in his deep voice.
"Do you think he will be safe enough?" I asked him as I looked over to see him tie back his long charry blond hair that was blowing around from the wind. Most likely annoying him.
"Of course, Alpha. Luke and his team are some of the best trackers your father trained before you took over the pack. Why are you worried for the boy's safety so much anyway?" He asked as he looked through the binoculars after Sam. "It's who he is working for that we are after, right?"
I sighed deeply to myself trying to hold back my real feelings about the matter. "Of course but the boy seems innocent enough. He did give up the phone without a fight and he was being truthful when he told us he didn't know who hired him. I don't want him getting hurt or killed. I mean what if he was just a boy down on his luck and needed money or the people who hired him made him do it because they were holding something over his head?"
Brian looked over at me with a weird confused look. "Why are you so concerned about the boy? Normally you don't care what happens to human bait like this."
I couldn't stop the growl that rose from my throat as I showed him my teeth. "Don't call him bait like that. And he is... different than a normal human so I'm curious as to what he is. I mean he did almost outrun the both of you in your wolf forms and he heals fast too. Those wounds honestly should have killed him and yet here he is a week later walking out of the hospital on his own with only a few bruises to show for it. After we find out who he is working for I want him back. So Luke and his team better keep two eyes on him at all time," I told them with a hint of anger in the last sentence as I watched Sam disappear around the corner.
