Emmett's POV
I stepped out of the private jet and breathed in the familiar scent of home. I needed this after that long plane ride. After the four of us talked, my mind just kept turning over and over again.
The car ride back to the packhouse was just as long as the plane ride. At least, that's how it felt. I was drained of energy, and my body was stiff from the trip. I just wanted to shift and stretch my paws before taking a long nap, hopefully, cuddle up next to my mate.
"You believe what he said about Sam and his wolf?" Baxter asked as we got out of the car.
"I think it's a big possibility," I answered.
"I knew something was off about him the moment his eyes changed in the lab. It's like, his whole body language changed, but he wasn't in any pain like how Shadow described. I mean..., beside the long ass needle they shoved into the corner of his eye just before-"
"What?" I asked, stopping dead in my tracks. "Why would they do that?"
"It was filled with that purple stuff. I think they were trying to get it to work faster, but it clearly didn't work. Before they could give Sam another shot, is when his eyes changed. That's when his wolf fully-"
"Alpha!" Beth, one of my secretaries, yelled while running out of the building. She looked a little panicked, but when she saw a few other members walk by, she smiled nicely and nodded to them. It was a sign that something was bothering her, but she didn't want others to notice. "Alpha Emmett. How was the trip?" she asked, looking between Baxter and me, but without giving me time to answer, she turned to me. "Can we talk..., alone for a moment?"
"Is Sam okay?" I asked her, needing to know why she was being so secretive.
"Sam is fine. Mason and Brian took good care of him while you were away, but I need a word about something else, please?"
After excusing myself from Baxter, we walked off to the side as he walked into the building to give us privacy and rejoin Vincent and Shadow.
"What is so urgent, Beth?"
She looked around quickly to make sure no one else could hear. "Patrol found a few bodies inside the city. They were all drained of blood with bite wounds on their necks."
I let out a laugh and pinched the bridge of my nose. The situation wasn't funny in the slightest, but with everything that had happened and now a vampire was invading my territory was just the topping on the cake.
"I can't fucken believe this," I said more to myself than to Beth.
"I didn't want to cause further panic with everything that's been going on lately, so I've been trying to keep it quiet. Um, but Alpha, the bodies we found are not any humans living in the city, and it seems like they were placed here. It's like the vampire wants the bodies to be found, but they want them found by us."
I looked at her in confusion. "If the bodies aren't from the city, who are they? Where did they come from?"
"I... I don't know. All of the fingerprints have been burned off long before death, and it seems as though we can't find any dental records of the humans either. I want to say they're Hunters, but they don't look like Hunters."
"I want to see the bodies," I told her and started walking towards the packhouse.
It didn't take long before we got to the infirmary morgue, and the mortician opened one of the doors to pull out a body.
"They are definitely human, Alpha. All drained of blood. All different ages ranging from about 27 to 56."
"What about the belongings you found on them?" I asked, looking over the body.
Beth was right to assume that they weren't hunters. They all had little to no muscle mass. For a hunter to take down someone ten times stronger than themselves, they would need a larger muscle build.
"They are over here, Alpha," he said, pointing at the rack full of begs. "They all have one thing in common."
I walked over as he opened one of the bags and pulled out a card. Taking it from him, I looked at the symbol drawn with blood.
It was a drawing of a five-pointed star, with three arrows pointed inward to the middle. A simple symbol, but something seemed oddly familiar about it.
I took out my phone and opened my emails, looking through the ones sent to the Council of the crime scenes. Flipping through them, I stopped at the one taken of the dead Dr. Lee. Her pictureless name tag was out as I zoomed in. It was blurry, but the same symbol as the drawing on the card.
"They all worked at the hidden labs," I said, looking up from the phone. "Whoever this vampire is is hunting down the survivors that worked there."
"So they are... helping us?" Beth asked.
"I really don't know," I told her truthfully. "It is possible that the other workers got out before the attack. They had a lot of different labs there, and I doubt Dr. Lee was the only scientist there. Maybe they were nurses or assistants. But why would a vampire kill them and drop them off for us to find?"
"Something is off here," Beth said as she rubbed her chin.
"Beth, increase the groups for petrol. Make sure this stays in petrol and have them try to sniff this vampire out next time they find a body. No one is to approach the vamp until I get there. Understand?"
"Yes, Alpha. I'll get right on it." She smiled with a nod before hurrying off.
Friend or foe, I can't have a vampire leaving dead bodies around my city's borders. I needed to meet this vamp and get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, I need to see how Sam is doing.
I agreed to try and get Sam to shift and see how the relationship was between him and his wolf. We needed to know if they could connect and where they stood together. I needed to know if my mate was at war within himself.
