Emmett's POV
It's been 5 days since we rushed Felix to the hospital here in the city. It was touch and go for a while. His wounds wouldn't heal as they should have but he was able to pull through.
I walked into his warmer-than-expected room to find Mason in the same spot. He was a mess, as anyone could have guessed. When Sam was here I couldn't do much, knowing how I hurt him, it pained me, but to everyone's surprise, Sam healed as fast as any of my own warriors would have with all those wounds. Not as fast as me or Mason but still fast enough that it won't leave scars.
"How is he doing today?" I asked as I walked over carefully.
Mason didn't look away from Felix as he sat on the side of the bed. Half of his face was covered in bandages and gauze wrapped around his head to keep it in place, tubes ran into his nose and mouth, and his arm was deeply bruised from the IVs and where they had to draw his blood for testing. His body was so weakened that the nurses were scared to even take his blood pressure in fear of bruising his skin and having the protective Mason attack them.
"They had to take the eye since it was cut damn near in half and out of the socket. The claw marks will scar because they aren't healing fast enough. It seems after some testing they found Frozen Frost Root in his blood which explains why his body temperature is dangerously low, he even feels ice cold to the touch despite the heating pads. They believe the dagger that bastard stabbed into Felix's stomach was coated in it," he said with no emotion in his voice.
Frozen Frost Root was an extremely rare root only found on the highest mountains. How that sly fox got his paws on a poison so dangerous, I'll never know. "I'm so sorry-,"
"I don't want to hear an apology right now," Mason interrupted me. "It's not your fault and I don't blame you for what happened either. I just... don't want to hear it anymore."
I took a deep breath, it pained me to see him like this. "Did they say when he would wake up?"
"They have him sedated so he won't wake up just yet. They are afraid that the shock of losing his eye will put him into a more critical state so they want him to heal more before they allow him to wake." He took Felix's hand in his and rubbed his thumb lightly over the delicate pale skin. "I... I don't know how I'm supposed to tell him when he wakes up Emmett. How am I supposed to make this better?"
I walked over carefully and laid my hand on his shoulder. "You'll just have to show him that you still love him just the same as you did before Mason."
"I love him more than anything, maybe even more now," he said, letting a tear slip out. "To see him like this breaks me but when he wakes to this... it's going to break him 10 times more," he told me as he lifted Felix's hand to kiss it softly and rubbed his cheek against it to give it warmth. "Especially now that he doesn't have a pack."
"Then it will be up to you to make him feel confident in himself again. I understand your fear but you have to think positively."
He looked at me for the first time but it was out of the flash of anger that crossed his face. "What exactly is the positive here Emmett? Because I don't fucken see it!" He yelled as he stood up.
I took a step back and put my hands up to let him know I wasn't challenging him. "Look at it this way Mason, now neither of you have to hide your love anymore. He can wear your mark with pride and you can finally, fully be together as one," I told him truthfully. "And if not for him telling us about the experiments and missing people we never would've known. We have been looking into it a lot and the number of missing shifters is unsettling of how much it has increased in the last 10 years, even more in the last 4 years. It can't be a coincidence. Mason, this runs deeper than just Sam or Baxter and Felix knew that too. He knew what they were doing was wrong and that's why he chose to help us. He was just trying to do the right thing, no one could have-,"
