Emmett's POV
"It's not much right now, but we can remodel it and paint the walls," I told Sam as I walked around the large empty living room. My hands shook slightly as my mind went a million miles a minute on what needed fixing.
I thought this place was in a little better shape than it was, but years of neglect showed in the thick layer of dust and stale smell. Everything was outdated, from the electrical to the carpeting.
Sam stood by the door holding Lily while I started rambling about how we could fix things and what we could do to the five-bedroom, six-bathroom apartment that used to house the lead alpha and their families back when the pack was ruled through bloodlines.
"Emmett," Sam said, touching my shoulder as I told him about laying hardwood in the living room and hallways.
"Yes, my moon," I answered, turning my head to him. When I did, I realized my fingers were in my hair, but I held a loving smile for the two.
"I thought you said room? This is...," he started to say but trailed off as he looked around.
"I know, but it's still close to the office, and I figured with us now raising a child, we should have our own space together instead of by the office where anyone could walk passed Lily's bedroom door. It's safer here for her, and I'm sure she'll be more comfortable."
The look in his eyes was like nothing I ever saw before. It made the alpha inside me feel proud to be able to give my mate and his child so much. The way his eyes half closed from the most beautiful smile made me feel like I was handing him the whole world.
"It'll take some time to remodel, so until then Lily can stay in our room. We can move here once it's finished," I told him before looking over at Lily. "Would you like to go pick out your room?"
She looked over at me but then hid into Sam's neck where she looked the most comfortable, nuzzling her face in his scent. Without the scent of her mother, Sam's must get her the same calmness. So much had changed in such a short time, so I didn't blame her for the nervous action.
Lily shifted in Sam's arms without warning, making him gasp and nearly drop her. Her wolf form was a beautiful pure white without a hint of any other color found from where I could see.
She began turning in his arms and wiggling around. He was focused to put her on the floor.
"Markus said she didn't have much control over her shifting. That scared me, though," he chuckled, but I could see the worry in his eyes as he watched her.
"It's common for pups," I tried to reassure him since he watched the wolf snuff around with worry.
"Yeah, but her wolf is split like mine. Do you think it would take her longer to gain control? I don't even remember how or when I shifted back, and Markus said it takes her a while to shift back."
"We can learn it together, Sam. I'll be here each step of the way, for you and her too." I hugged him close. "Some of the elders in the pack told me that I was in my wolf form while I was a baby and throughout most of my toddler years. My body was confused since I was born as a wolf. It took me a long time to control it. Most of us do, so there isn't anything to worry about."
"Thank you," he mumbled before hugging back.
My arms tightened around his shoulders. "Of course. You are my moon, and I'll always be here for both of you, until my last day in this world." I leaned down and kissed the top of his head before breathing in his scent.
He looked up at me, and I was ready to meet his lips with mine, but Lily's wolf started to bark and let out a broken baby howl. I smiled as it warmed my heart to hear, and watched Sam's eyes change from brown to gold in a flash. Beautiful.
We held hands as we walked to find her snuffing around one of the rooms. "I guess her wolf found their room," I said with a smile.
Sam and I watched her play around in the old room for a while before heading back to our room. It took a few hours before she shifted back to her human form once her wolf got tired.
I stayed up late, working on my laptop at the table, listening to the sound of their soft snoring. Glancing over, Lily had snuggled into Sam's arms, and he hugged her protectively. The sight pulled my heart to them both, and soon, I couldn't find the willpower to look away.
I'm sure Sam was scared of his new responsibilities for her, but watching him with her from the moment they walked out of that cabin, I knew he was going to be a great father. I just hoped I could become a good stepfather to her.
I closed my emails, knowing I wouldn't get any more work done, and opened the pack shopping website. Everything on the site was made and sold by members within the pack for the pack. I looked up and saved things in a list from different bedding to clothes and different styled furniture sets for Lily's new room. I didn't want to buy anything until they looked through it and maybe pick some things together. It would be a good starting point for him to get to know her style while she is also figuring it out herself.
Once I spent over an hour gathering as much as I could think of that a little girl her age would need, I shut down my laptop and walked over to the bed. They hadn't moved an inch, so comfortable in each other's embrace that I almost didn't want to risk waking them if I laid down, but I wanted to hold my moon.
Of course, Sam was the lightest sleeper I knew, so by the time I got under the covers to cuddle up behind him, his head turned a little. His eyes were still closed, but he smiled. "Did you get some work done?" he asked in a sleepy tone.
"Yes, but I thought joining the two of you sounded even better." I smiled as I leaned closer to his lips. We sweetly kissed each other goodnight, and within seconds, sleep took over.

"Goddess," Mason said as we sat in my office. He looked down at the floor in deep thought after I told him about Lily. "Well, I'm glad it went well with the vampires then. A child though? That could have gone so many ways, but it never crossed my mind that was what they were doing here."
"Well, you know how vampires like to play games. Bored from all the years they've been alive. Nothing but a headache for everyone else, friend or foe." I was still dealing with the mess Markus and his clan made. Not one life that lived in the city was lost from the Hunters' attempted attack, but there were some injuries from the panic it put everyone in after seeing vampires killing people in the streets.
"I guess I shouldn't think anything less. Humans are like sheep to them. This could have been resolved quietly, but in a way, we do owe them a small thanks. Who knows what the Hunters were planning to do inside the city."
I sat there answering emails and tried not to think about it too much more, but Mason grew a huge smile as he sat there. "What?" I asked, turning my attention to him once again.
"A kid, huh?"
A smile filled my lips before I could stop it. "Yeah. She looks so much like him. They have the same eyes and round faces. The nose is slightly different, yet somehow similar in the way it curls up at the end. She's beautiful and shy, but her wolf has a fussy side, just like Samaul. She shifted a few days ago so I was able to meet her wolf. I can't wait to run with them both soon." I caught myself rambling and peeked over at Mason, who just sat there with his smile.
"Sounds like you are enjoying this. I can't wait to meet her. When are you going to introduce her to the pack? I'm sure my sister will be over the moon to meet her, especially after you banned Brian for a while."
I opened my mouth to say I wasn't sure but lost focus as a link overtook my thoughts.
"You need to get down to the mess hall now. Everyone is going batshit crazy, and I can't handle this alone," Viv's voice filled my mind before the link cut off.
She must have linked with Mason at the same time because he and I were out the door and down the hall within seconds. What the hell could be going on now?
