Emmett's POV
Sam was so beautiful in his sleep. I couldn't help but move the dark brown hair from his forehead to get a better look at his peacefully sleeping face, but the cuffs around his wrists and ankles made me feel like I was the bad guy. I hated them there, but it made the others feel safe when they came to check on him from the fear they felt after what happened.
With an injury to the head and not yet awakened, I didn't want to move him to the packhouse. I was being greedy, maybe even selfish, but I didn't want something to happen while moving him.
Sam's eyes moved and flickered slightly, jumping me out of my thoughts. They said it was normal for him to have little twitching here and there while he slept, but it always made my heart skip, thinking he was finally waking up. My wolf whined when he didn't.
It's only been a day since my meeting with Geo, and I had the new contract ready. Even if they couldn't help us with this curse, as long as they tried, the land would still be open to them, but I hoped they could help in some way or another. I just didn't know what else to do.
Vincent told me that they started feeding Dima's tiger. His tiger seemed to get more aggressive over his food, and when they had to stop feeding him so he wouldn't get sick. In turn, they had to shoot him with a tranquilizer to calm his beast side, but since feeding him all that meat, Dima hadn't shown signs of changing back yet, so they continued doing the same with the others. It seemed that it helped between shifts, and somehow they looked more healthy in human form, but they still had no control over themselves when they shifted.
The other children we found were all unaffected by this curse, thankfully. Yet, some were too young when taken to tell us much about packs or where they came from. We had a team trying to sort through the missing children's reports and match them with the children's descriptions as best as I could. However, once we could, they would be able to go home. I just pray to the goddess that they will be able to overcome the horror that they saw and went through with the Hunters.
But the ones affected by the curse still have a long way to go. I don't feel comfortable letting them out just yet. Vincent and I weren't sure about getting a hold of their packs just yet in fear that they would come and take them away without fully understanding what was going on. I didn't like the idea. Truthfully if it were my pack member or mate, I would want to know as soon as possible that they were alive and safe, but I couldn't risk them getting out unless we came up with a better solution than knocking them out with drugs every time they lost control.
Their animals needed to be out. They needed to eat and drink. They needed to hunt and run free but in a safe place so they wouldn't kill those around them. Sadly, they can't hunt and run freely yet, but they can shift to eat and stretch their animal bodies where they were now.
"Are you ready, Alpha?" Mason interrupted my thoughts as he poked his head into the room. "The car is waiting."
I looked down and caressed Sam's cheek, kissing his forehead again. I didn't want to leave, but the sooner I went to meet with Geo, the sooner I could come back here again.
Walking out of the room to meet with Mason, I almost ran into Baxter instead. I couldn't help the growl that left my throat.
"Excuse me," he said, but I stepped around him and started walking away. "You think you could put your pride aside for a moment? Things might go a little bit easier if we actually communicated."
I turned around quickly. "My pride?" I asked, feeling my alpha tone start to take over. "This has nothing to do with my pride."
"I don't know what I did for you to hate me so much more than before, but this isn't the time, and your constant unwant of me here has been making me uncomfortable," he sneered.
