Sam's POV
I did as he asked and kept close to his side all the way down to the car. Mason was waiting outside for us, but after spending so much time with him while Emmett was gone, something seemed different, yet I couldn't figure out what it was.
"Are you kidding me?" Emmett walked over to him.
Mason smiled larger than I'd ever seen him smile before. He didn't say anything as they hugged each other tightly for a few moments. I stood in the background, feeling as if I was missing something.
"Why didn't you tell me over the phone?" Emmett asked as he pulled away with a smile.
"Well, it just happened today, and not really something you would share over the phone. Is it?"
Emmett laughed a little as he put his arm around my shoulders. "I guess it isn't. You have terrible timing, but I'm still so happy for you both, brother. It's long overdue. Congratulations."
I looked between them again as Mason thanked him before they opened the door and got into the car. I wasn't sure what they were talking about, but it seemed like something to be joyful over. Their emotions made me want to be happy with them, but it also felt awkward as they both looked over at me as we got comfortable in our seats.
"Eh, right," Emmett said with an apologetic look. "Mason and his mate are now bonded for life. You can smell that his scent is different. That's because when he marked his mate, their scents mixed, though Felix's scent is now much stronger than his own. That is to let others know his mate takes him. You haven't met Felix yet, so you wouldn't who his scent."
My eyes widened as I looked back at Mason, who brightened more as he looked at the ground like he was replaying a beautiful memory.
"Oh. I'm sorry. I have so much to learn still. Congratulations to both of you. I wish you both nothing but happiness in what the future brings you," I smiled at him.
His eyes shot up to mine as soon as I finished. "Sam, thank you so much. You have no idea how much that means to me, even though you aren't Luna of the pack yet."
"Emmett was right. I have much more to learn before becoming Luna."
Emmett kissed the top of my head when his phone started to ring in his pocket. He looked down at it, but his face darkened as he read something. "We need to get going. They still haven't found the vampire, and now they found a few bodies."
Emmett told the driver the new address we would be going to the speed of the vehicle picked up more.
Once we got into a parking lot, a few pack members were there. They stood around a body that lay on the ground. The smell of blood hit my nose as soon as I stepped out of the car.
"Alpha," one of the members walked over with a slight fear in her eyes. "There are a few more in the ally over there. It seems they were trying to escape, but these humans were no match for the vampire's speed."
"I see. Is there a trail of the vampire's scent?" Emmet asked.
"Yes. Zack and a team are following it now," she answered as we walked over to the body.
It was hard to look at the man's torn body. His head was ripped nearly off, and his back had long slash marks. The air smelled worse as we entered the alley where three more bodies were found. I stopped as I covered my nose when the smell became too overwhelming. My stomach was turning all kinds of ways as my mouth began to water. I knew I would puke as I looked around for a trash can.
"Come on, little one," Mason said as he grabbed my arm and pulled me around the corner.
He opened the lid to a can and hardly got out of the way as I began hurling in it until nothing was left in my stomach.
