A Hard Conversation

When the states stepped into the meeting room that day, they were not expecting IDC and Gov at the head of the table.

Gov was a less welcome surprise, whenever he ran the meetings he always ran them by the books; no fighting, no fun shenanigans, just straight work. No one liked it when DC was sick and Gov took over the meetings until he got better.

"The hells going on?" Massachusetts asked sitting down.

"Honestly, the fact that you use that language during important meetings...." Gov said with a sigh.

"Okay cut the bullshit, where the hell is DC?" Connecticut asked in no mood. IDC waited until everyone sat down before clearing her throat.

"As you know, the White House has experienced several cases of COVID over the past few days." IDC began.

"Unfortunately, DC has also been diagnosed with COVID." Gov announced. Silence filled the meeting room as the two personifications of the government allowed the states to absorb the news.

"Okay?" Florida asked although his voice gave away that he was worried. "Dee will crush COVID, he always comes back on his feet."

"It's not so simple Florida." IDC whispered.

"You see a democracy is a fragile thing." Gov announced switching to his theatrics voice. "One tiny thing can dismantle it, one tiny thing can disrupt it's flow...."

"Would you get to the point?" Texas demanded.

"Honestly how can he date them?" Gov whispered helping as IDC elbowed him on the side.

"What Gov is trying to say." IDC explained. "Is that DC from a young age has always been sick. He caught colds like baseballs, flu's were an annual occurrence, and deadlier diseases ...." IDC drew a sharp intake of breath instantly worrying the states.

"Look right now we have his case under control." Gov cut in, preventing his cousin from crying. "He's just been very sick and sleepy."

"But you're saying that could change." California said fearfully.

"At any moment, yes. Just yesterday he spiked at 107 fever and we nearly had to take him to the hospital." IDC said sighing wetly.

"Wait....how long has he been sick?" Texas asked, eyeing the two governments suspiciously.

"I don't think that matters Tex..."

"It most certainly does!" Texas yelled causing everyone to jump. "He hasn't been home for five days! Are you telling me he's been sick ALL FIVE?"

"Yes." IDC whispered.

"You sons of a--" Oklahoma and Kentcuky quickly held Texas back from attacking the two governments.

"So that's it then? Our partner is sick and it could get bad?" Louisiana asked already in the process of comforting Florida. IDC and Gov looked at each other worriedly.

"What now?" New York demanded ready to go full Texas.

"Like I said before I was interrupted, democracy is a fragile thing and one thing can disrupt it. With democracy being fragile, and as a consequence DC being so fragile in his health, we had to have some....discussions." Gov announced. Silence fell once more.

"What kind....of discussion?" Georgia asked.

"In the.....in the case...."

"Don't say it. Please don't." Florida begged already in tears.

"In the case of DC's death." IDC announced ignoring the strangled cry from Florida. "I will take over his position as the United States government. Meetings will continue although I will not be running it, that job may fall to Gov."

"Oh goody." Gov mumbled rolling his eyes.

"But he'll get better right?" California demanded balling his fists up. "Rosie will beat COVID no matter how weak his health is....right?"

"We don't know. We had another scare this morning and the doctor says one more and we'll have to take him to the hospital. We had to start seriously considering the possibility that DC might not make it." IDC explained.

"No." Everyone turned in shock to New York who looked ready to explode. "I'm not going to accept the possibility because DC will make it! He's been through so much some DISEASE won't take him!"

"We know New York, but right now this is a very serious possibility and we need to consider it." Gov explained yelping as he felt himself getting grabbed.

"THEN YOU GO BACK TO WASHINGTON AND MAKE SURE SUGAR DOESN'T DIE." Texas screamed, fighting off Kentucky, Oklahoma and Georgia who were trying to pull him away.

"ENOUGH." IDC screamed, stopping the chaos around her. "You think I like telling you all this news? I've had to sit through several of these meetings throughout the course of my life! Imagine how you'd feel if you had to hear that your baby brother could die?"

"GOD WHY COULDN'T IT BE ME?" Florida screamed nearly inconsolable. The southern states managed to pry Texas off of Gov, and Texas kicked the wall before storming out. Louisiana was trying to play double duty and comfort both Florida and California while New York pushed back his chair so hard it spilled on the floor and left with Texas.

"Well I think that was a productive meeting." Gov muttered re-adjusting his suit and tie. IDC glared at her cousin through shiny eyes making him gulp.

"I'll shut up now."

"And so we pray to you, O Heavenly Father, that you heal DC and bring him home, if it's in your blessings to do so." Utah prayed alongside some other states in the living room later that day. The Statehouse was depressed to say the least. No one was talking to one another and fights over petty things were breaking out over the stupidest things were breaking out every hour. The main five were as far removed from everyone as they could; Texas and New York still hadn't returned, Louisiana was trying to remain strong but everyone could tell he was failing, Florida was nowhere to be seen although he was in the house, and California, who was famously an atheist was sitting with the other states listening to Utah, although everyone could tell he was zoned out.

Louisiana finished his third daiquiri of the day (and probably not the last) when he heard sniffling coming from the meeting room. He cautiously went to check and found Florida sitting at his spot at the table, looking directly across to the empty chair that usually contained DC.

"S-So who do you want me to call DC?" Florida asked, speaking to nothing.

"Sha...." Florida whispered.

"Loui quiet, Dee wants me to call a state." Florida ordered. Louisiana said nothing but got closer to his small boyfriend, hugging him tight.

"H-He can't die right? H-He needs to run the meetings." Florida said with a whimper, soaking Louisiana's jersey. "He can't run the meetings if he's dead."

"I know sha, I know." Louisiana whispered kissing the top of Florida's head.

"I don't know what I'll do." Florida whimpered. "If he....if he..." Florida completely broke down, his entire body shaking. Louisiana held his boyfriend tight, feeling hot tears fall down his own cheeks as well.

"None of us do sha, none of us do." Louisiana whispered. "If DC dies a part of us dies with him."
