DC finished getting dressed in the mirror and adjusted his tie.

He took a deep breath.

"California. Y'know how you're nonbinary, I am too." DC announced. He sighed and face palmed. That didn't sound right.

"Cali, surprise I'm an enby too!" DC tried. He sighed in frustration again.

"Hey poppy you know how gender is fake? WELL SURPRISE!" DC announced doing jazz hands. He let out another groan and rubbed his forehead, before heading out of his room, making his way towards the kitchen.

"Everyone, meeting in ten." DC announced to the states gathered in the living room. He rolled his eyes at the groan and went to the cabinets to grab himself a mug.

"DC I've got a question for you." Alabama called. "What do you think of North Carolina's new law about trans kids?"

"I haven't gotten the paperwork done yet." DC muttered turning on the machine, cheeks already burning red.

"It's wrong and you are going to kill kids with it." California yelled.

"They're too young to be transitioning!" North Carolina argued. DC bit his lip and put his mug in the coffee machine, trying to ignore the arguments.

"Oh so we can tell them they can make career choices but not what they want to do with their bodies?" California demanded.

"Maybe if we raised 'em right boys won't want to become girls and girls won't want to become boys!" Tennessee yelled. DC bit his lip harder, tasting blood.

"That's not how that works! That's not how any of this works!" California argued.

"It's all this new agey bullshit. If you just taught 'em boy means boy and girl means girl..." All the states jumped when something was hit against the counter.

"GOD DAMN IT NORTH CAROLINA." DC yelled. "MAYBE IF WE TEACH KIDS ABOUT GENDER I WOULDN'T OF TAKEN SO LONG TO FIGURE OUT THAT I'M NON-BINARY." Silence fell in the living room, and DC became painfully aware of all the states staring at him, including California who was looking at his boyfriend in shock. DC swallowed hard then dashed off, running into his room and slamming his door. He leaned against the door panting hard, the impact over what he'd just done hitting him like a break. Where was Florida when he needed him?

DC jumped at a knock at his door and he backed away fearful as California stepped inside.

"Rosie." California whispered, closing the door. "Are you non-binary?" DC swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded.

"BABES." California gasped, taking a big step over and hugging DC hard. DC wrapped his arms around California and squeezed him.

"I figured it out but...I was scared to tell you all." DC whispered in California's shoulder.

"You were afraid to tell me? Rosie?" California asked with a smile breaking the hug and touching his face. "Babes you know I'm genderfluid."

"I know....I know it's stupid." DC whispered looking down. California brushed his thumbs over DC's cheeks.

"Does anyone else know?" California whispered.

"Dia. He's been practicing any pronouns I'm working on constantly." DC said with a laugh.

"Is that why I heard him mumbling 'he/he/he/them/them' today?" California asked with a smile. DC nodded and the two boyfriends shared a laugh.

"Whatever you chose, I'll always support you." California whispered, kissing DC's cheek. "I can't believe I get to share my no-gender with you."

"Gender is a social construct." DC teased and California laughed, the two leaning in to kiss. They only broke the kiss at the sound of the coffee machine beeping, then left the bedroom together.

"Wait you're one of 'em now?" Alabama asked watching the two come back.

"Always have been." DC muttered going back into the kitchen as California leapt up on the kitchen island.

"There's only two genders tho--"

"SHUT UP NORTH CAROLINA." DC and California yelled, effectively shutting up the southern states for good.
