I think shaving might be a small sensory thing with DC too, which is why sometimes it's very inconsistent 

Oh sure eventually he knows he has to shave but will put it off until finally he can't put it off no more

When DC was first getting into make-up, he'd just slather the foundation over his beard and call it a day. California gently taught him how to apply it so it'd look good.
