Peter's POV
She had cried... but this time it was completely my fault. I don't know why I said all that shit to her, especially when I could see in her eyes how much it hurt. She told me that she never thought I would ever hurt her like that, and no sentence in this world has ever made me feel so bad.
I heard aunt May's footsteps, as soon as I unlocked the door, and I realized I had completely forgotten to inform her where I was sleeping this night. Her hands were placed on her hips in a way that showed her frustration and confusion. "Where the hell have you been?" she asked with a voice, that made me feel small. "You haven't answered any of my texts or calls," she started moving around the room, with her hands gesturing how mad she was. "You've been gone all night, without leaving just one clue of where you were. Do you know how worried that makes me?" she sat down at the dinner table and angrily put her hands to her head and sighed.
"May I'm fine relax," I said. She stood up from the chair and faced me.
"Cut the crap Peter. I know you and Rue has... something... going on, I know you sneak out almost every night and frankly, I know you didn't sleep at Neds place last night. What's going on?" she looked so exhausted, as she asked that last question, as if she had held it in for a long time. I started thinking about Rue and how I had hurt her, when May said her name. I couldn't hold the eye contact with May anymore, so I sat down. I could feel my eyes starting to sting and get red. May uncrossed her arms and softened in her movements. She took a step up to me and put a hand in my hair in a comforting and motherly way.
"I really fucked up May..." I whispered and closed my eyes, so the tears that had built up were pressured out onto my cheeks. She hunkered down, so we were face to face and put both hands on each of my cheeks.
"I have a feeling that this is about a girl," she then said. I sniffled and did a tiny painful nod while having my chin crumbled trying not to let my lip tremble. "Oh Peter," she sighed made a faint smile, to show me her empathy.
"I like Liz... I do but... Rue hates her," I wiped a tear away with my sleeve and looked up at May. "I got mad at Rue and I said some really... really hurtful things to her," May nodded her head back and furrowed her eyebrows.
"Well, what'd you say?" she asked. I looked down at the table's brown surface.
"I don't want to say, but just- know that it was something really wrong and that I regretted it right after I said it," May took a second, probably to decide whether she wanted me to say it or not.
"Alright," she raised her eyebrows and adjusted herself in the seat. "Did she um... did she hold eye contact while crying?" she then asked. What a random, but real question.
"Yeah," I nodded even though my answer had been clear. I could still see her face, when I closed my eyes.
"And did she tell you to leave right after?" May then asked. Had she been there? I nodded again and closed my eyes, to keep them from watering further. "Yeah you're screwed," she sighed and ran her hand up my back.
"Gee thanks May," I looked at her irritated.
"Sorry," she chuckled. "You know, my best friend back when I was your age was this boy named Matt," she looked away from me and smiled, probably daydreaming about him already. "He started dating this girl that I absolutely hated... I would always avoid her, but while I had my first conversation with her, I realized something," I turned my head to her, now very curious.
"What?" I asked, and she smiled.
"I realized that the reason I hated her so much... was because I loved him so much," My lips parted, as I looked down at the table. Does Rue love me? "Peter I don't know Liz, but let me tell you something though... girls read girls, much better than boys read girls, so maybe Rue just wants to protect you, because she knows Liz might be bad for you," May explained.
"Well now I feel even worse," I let my hands bump onto the table as I leaned back and sighed. "I gotta talk to her," I uttered and got up from the seat.
"Don't forget your coat!" she yelled, right before I grabbed it and headed out the door. I ran to the subway and sprinted up her apartment stairs with my mind racing around. What was I even gonna say to her? Would she yell at me? Did she really love me, or was Liz really a horrible person? I knocked on her door. What was I even expecting, she would obviously still me mad at me. When the door left the frame and moved back, it revealed Rue looking down at the floor while quickly sniffling and wiping away the tears on her red cheeks. I could tell she had showered since her hair was slightly damp, and her makeup wasn't smudged anymore. I had never seen her more beautiful, then in that exact moment.
"Peter?" she said confused, when her eyes had turned away from the floor and up at me. I wanted to say so much, I in that moment realized couldn't be expressed with words.
I looked her directly in her foxy eyes, as I quickly took the one step forward that had been between us, and collided my lips onto hers aggressively. I could tell she was surprised, by the way her lips had moved at first, but to my luck she gave in and let herself kiss me back. My hands were strictly placed on her cheeks to hold her face in tact with mine, as her warm lips traced around mine. I pushed her body backwards and up against the wall, without letting our lips part from each other. She had closed the door behind my back right before her back touched the wall. I couldn't help but let my body push further up against hers, while I felt her nose tip graze around on my cheek.
In a heated moment I grabbed her wrists and tapped them against the wall, one on each side of her head. My hands glided up to hers and our fingers mingled into one another. Out of nowhere she let her head fall down, breaking up the kiss and I let her hands go.
"Peter... you can't just- kiss me... and expect me to forget about earlier," she whispered, without looking up at me. Her body moved away from mine leaving me facing the empty white wall.
"Can I ask you two questions?" I then asked making her turn to me. She gave me no answer, but only an intriguing eye contact. "Has Liz actually treated you bad?"
"Are we really gonna do this again-"
"Just answer the question," I interrupted. She sighed, showing me that she was a bit irritated.
"Yeah Peter... she has," she confirmed with her eyebrows raised, now waiting for the second question.
"And... do you like me?" It was like I had hit one of her nerves, with that question. She had changed her impatient and slightly annoyed gaze, to an innocent and embarrassed one. One I couldn't resist.
