Wild Heart [Max Verstappen]

Part 27

With my eyes, I scanned the room we were in to find something to protect myself. He was wary when he heard the car stop. So he was a bit distracted so I could jump into action. I moved my head so I could bite his hand. a growl came from the man as he withdrew his hand. I jumped up and felt the knife that first rested against my body make a cut in my arm. I went straight to the door and opened the lock to make my way to the stairs in the hallway. I ran down the stairs and sometimes skipped 2 stairs at once. I saw Max standing at the glass door downstairs, I pulled the door open and I flew in his arms completely out of breath. Only now I noticed that blood was running down my arm. Max cupped my head "are you okay?"
I nodded a little in shock, the police arriving with flickering lights. A cop came to me while 3 others went upstairs to my apartment. Max took me back in his arms and we both looked at the door where the 3 cops disappeared. A little later they came back outside but had no one down with them, my worst nightmare now became reality, he escaped, how was that possible?
I was allowed to get some stuff from inside but I was not allowed to stay there anymore so they could do further investigations. The cut on my arm wasn't very deep so it didn't need stitches, just disinfected it a bit. Tomorrow I had to go to the police station. I was allowed to sleep with Max tonight, he would make sure I was safe for the rest of the night.

Still in shock, he led me into his house and helped me sit down on the couch. "Would you like some tea?"
I just stared straight ahead and nodded. He went to the kitchen and made us some tea. My phone vibrated in my pants and I looked at my screen

You're not rid of me yet... I've got eyes ok you everywhere you go and I'll get a second chance. If you dare to open your mouth to the police or show this message to someone, your sweet brother, your boyfriend and everyone you love will die. I'll be in touch...

I jumped a little by Max who suddenly stood back next to me and I quickly put my phone away. He handed me a cup of tea and I smiled weakly at him.
"If there's anything I can do you should tell me."
I nodded before taking a sip of my tea.
"I won't ask you any questions, if you want to talk about it know you can do that to me. And just so you know Emma and Victoria are here too, so you don't get scared tomorrow."
"Thank you" I whispered and laid my head on his shoulder.
Moments later I fell asleep to Max and I who thought I would not be able to sleep because of what had happened.

I woke up the next morning to two whispering voices. I slowly opened my eyes and saw Emma and Victoria sitting in the other couch. Max and I had apparently fallen asleep on the couch together, I lay with my head on his chest and his arm was around me. I sat up carefully, trying not to wake him.
"Hey Nora" said Victoria with a big smile
"Did you sleep well?" Emma added.
"Yeah thanks... can I maybe take a shower?"
"Yes, you don't have to ask, I'll come with you to show you the bathroom" said Emma as she stood up.
Cautiously I also stood up and looked again at Max who was still sleeping peacefully. Together with Emma we walked to the bathroom.
"If you need anything just give a shout" a sincere sweet smile appeared on the girl's lips before she went back down.
I leaned my hands on the sink and looked at myself in the mirror. I had dark bags under my eyes and my hair was a mess. I kept thinking about the message I got yesterday, what did he want from me...

After a good hot shower I put on fresh clothes and walked back downstairs where Max, Victoria, Emma and Lando were busy talking about what had happened. Lando looked at me and immediately walked up to me "I'm so sorry I didn't answer my phone, I was asleep. Are you okay?" The concerned boy put his hands on my shoulders.
"Don't worry Lando everything is okay"
"If something happened to you I would never forgive myself"
I gave him a heartfelt hug "but nothing happened so no need to blame yourself"
While hugging he squeezed me closer "do you want me to come to the police station?"
"Gladly"
Lando nodded and took his keys, Max patted his shoulder "come back here after that" Max said looking at me. We both nodded and left the house, got in the car and headed for the police station.

So many questions were fired at me and I couldn't answer half of the questions. Sometimes I had to repeat myself 20 times and I got so tired of it. They didn't find any DNA or clues so they released the apartment again. I had the feeling that they didn't really take the case seriously and so they weren't going to do anything with it. That was the frustrating thing, time passed so slowly, the minutes seemed like hours. Lando wasn't allowed in so time would pass by slow for him while he waited outside for me. Should I show the message I received yesterday? No, I didn't dare, maybe it was a false threat to scare me. After 2 hours I was allowed to leave, they said they would do everything they could to find the that person, but I doubted that. One thing I knew for sure I did not want to return to the apartment. I'd rather move back home. I walked out to Lando's car and got in, the boy looked at me quizzically waiting for me to start talking.
"They will do everything they can to find the person, I can go back to the apartment but I don't want that..."
"You can come and live with me Nora you know that"
I nodded and Lando drove back to Max's house where I told the whole story from the police.
