Demi's P.O.V.
Comfort washed over me and Ansley as I took the stage at Cody and Mark's wedding reception. The microphone fit so nicely in my hand as I migrated towards center stage to make a short speech.
I had a surprise for her that I'd been so nervous about for weeks, but I was finally calm about it. Confident, even.
Ansley came up behind me with her own microphone, and she spoke first. "Hey, everyone."
A few muddled hey's came in response, but they were overpowered by Cody shouting, "I love you, babe!"
She giggled softly. "I'm Ansley, and this is Demi. I'm sure none of you have ever heard of her." A few laughs trickled throughout the spacious, filled room. "She's my girlfriend, and she's kind of cute, I guess." More laughs circled around.
"Aw, thanks, babe, but you're kind of required to say that," I replied, reciting our pre-rehearsed banter. "You're not too bad yourself, I guess."
"Thanks. So, we're friends of both grooms. Congratulations to both of you, Cody and Mark. We love you so much, and we are both so insanely happy and proud of you both for deciding to put up with each other for the rest of your lives, so have fun with that. It's so amazing that you're both about to spend your lives together. I go through one night with this one," she nodded her head to me, "and it's exhausting."
Everyone's chuckles motivated us to continue. "I didn't hear you complaining last night," I mocked.
"Anyway!" she interjected. "We're here to sing for you guys and gals and non-binary pals."
I appeared confused and stepped closer to her, whispering (though still into the mic), "Sing? I'm just here for the food..."
"Babe, we talked about this. Sing first, eat later."
"But... I don't even know how to sing."
"Well, you don't have much of a choice right now... There's, like, two hundred people staring at us, and this is the moment you decide to panic about this?" she questioned sarcastically.
Cody stood from his chair and shouted, "You got this, babes! If you're good, I might save you a plate!" He started cheering, which encouraged the rest of the reception guests to cheer until I finally sat myself at the grand piano that was on the stage.
Ansley picked up a guitar from the other side of the stage and sat on a stool as the lights were dimmed everywhere except for the stage and the dance floor. "This song is for the grooms. Congratulations on this first dance, husbands," she smiled, nodding to me to signal us starting.
In sync, we started playing a slow version of Selena Quintanilla's I Could Fall In Love. The lights above us shown different colors, creating a dreamy atmosphere as Cody and Mark danced in the middle.
I could lose my heart tonight
If you don't turn and walk away
'Cause the way I feel I might
Lose control and let you stay'Cause I could take in my arms
And never let goI could fall in love (in love) with you
I could fall in love (in love) with you (with you baby)I can only wonder how
Touching you would make me feel
But if I take that chance right now
Tomorrow will you want me still (baby, do you want me?)So I should keep this to myself
And never let you knowI could fall in love (in love) with you
(I could fall in love with you)
I could fall in love (in love) with you (with you baby)
