~ I’d Rather

Noong una, halos hindi talaga kami nagkikibuan ni Matt. Mabuti na nga lang din at hindi ito nahalata ng mga kaklase namin. Pero nang dahil din dito, todo rin ang pangungulit ni Cedrick sa akin.
“Sige na, Danie. Pumayag ka na. Sumama ka na sa aking mag-dinner mamaya,” he pleaded.
“Hindi nga pwede. Mag-aaral ako mamaya at sa mga susunod pang araw. Malapit na kaya ang prelim. Hindi ka ba mag-aaral?”
“Ah! So pagkatapos ng exams papayag ka nang sumama sa aking makipag-date?”
I rolled my eyes at isinara ang librong pinag-aaralan ko.
“No, Cedrick,” mariin kong sabi. “Hindi ako sasama sa’yong makipag-date. Not now, not ever. So please, can I study now?”
“Bakit naman? Napapangitan ka ba sa akin? Nababahuan ka ba sa akin?” parang bata niyang tanong
Napahilamos lang ako sa mukha.
“No. Cedrick. Hindi ka pangit at lalong hindi ka mabaho. Frankly speaking, you actually smell good and you’re a really gorgeous man. But...,” I paused.
He was just looking at me, iniintay ang kasunod kong sasabihin.
“But you’re not really my type.”
At nakita kong biglang nalungkot si Cedrick, hindi ‘yung lungkot na umaarte lang, ‘yung nasaktan talaga.
“And just like that, you tore my heart into pieces,” tumalikod na siya sa akin at humarap sa unahan.
Hindi ko alam kung maaawa o matatawa ba ako ngayon kay Cedrick. He looks so depressed at ayaw niyang kumausap ng ibang tao. Ito na siguro ang sinasabi ng mga basahin na “mukhang katulad ng binayukos na papel.”
Suddenly, my phone beeped.
From Julius:
Mukhang ngayon lang na-reject si Cedrick sa tanang buhay niya. He’s even sulking! Thank you for making it happen, Miss Montecillo. :D
Hindi ko napigilang mapangiti sa message ni Julius. I looked at him and he winked at me.
Maya-maya pa, I noticed that everyone was holding his phone. Natatawa na rin sila. Mukhang nag-GM pa si Julius.
I looked at my right side at napansing nagpipigil din ng tawa si Matt habang nakatingin sa screen ng phone niya. He suddenly looked at me and smiled. Ngumiti din naman ako sa kanya.
Mabilis na lumipas ang araw. Kahit na hindi na kami tulad ng dati ni Matt na nagkukulitan, medyo nag-uusap na kami ngayon.
“Are you done reviewing? Exam na natin bukas,” he asked.
“Almost,” I answered. “Another round mamayang gabi.”
Ilang araw na hindi nagpaparamdam si Cedrick. I mean, pumapasok siya but he doesn’t talk to me or to anybody. He must have been really hurt by what I told him. But that morning...
“I thought sometime alone was what we really needed,” kanta niya habang pumapasok ng room at may dalang gitara.
Ugh! Seriously? But I must admit, he has a good voice like Matt. Looks and voice do run in their family.
You said this time would hurt more than it helps
But I couldn't see that
I thought it was the end of a beautiful story
And so I left the one I loved at home to be alone
Maya-maya pa ay may lalaking pumasok na may dalang bulaklak. Iniabot niya ito kay Cedrick and eventually, iniabot na rin ni Cedrick ang bulaklak sa akin.
And I tried to find out if this one thing is true
That I'm nothing without you
I know better now
And I've had a change of heart
I'd rather have bad times with you,
Than good times with someone else
At ang mga traydor kong kaklase, sumasabay pa sa pagkanta.
I'd rather be beside you in a storm,
Than safe and warm by myself
“Eeehhh! Don’t encourage him!” sigaw ko sa kabila ng kanilang pagkanta
Nagpatuloy lang sa pagkanta niya si Cedrick. And I really don’t know kung saang parte ng “ayoko” ang hindi niya maintindihan. Hindi ko rin alam kung saang parte ng gwapo niyang mukha nanggagaling ang pagpupursigi niya sa isang taong ayaw talaga sa kanya.
I'd rather have hard times together,
Than to have it easy apart
I looked at Cedrick with that indescribable disgust on my face. At ewan ko ba, I just find this urge to look on the person at my right.
“I'd rather have the one who holds my heart,” Matt sang, finishing the song.
My heart skipped a beat.
I was captivated by his mesmerizing eyes.
And I don’t understand why I just can’t take my eyes off of him.
