Chapter 9: A friend

Hermione bites her lip as she sees Draco walk out of his bedroom towards her.
‘Evening.’ he smiles.
‘What were you doing in there?’ Hermione asks.
Draco shrugs.
‘I was trying to find my ring, but it’s nowhere to be found.’ he says.
‘Perhaps your sink?’ Hermione suggest.
‘Hmm.’ Draco mumbles before he turns back and disappears into his room again.
‘How did you know!’ Draco says coming back into the common room.
‘You always place it there whenever you’re in the bathroom.’ Hermione shrugs.
‘Are you stalking me now?’ Draco asks.
‘No. I just noticed.’
‘What are you reading there?’ Draco asks looking at the book in her lap.
‘Les Misérables.’ Hermione says showing him the cover.
‘Les Miséwhates?’
‘Les Misérables.’ Hermione chuckles.
‘Never heard of it.’ Draco says walking around his seat and sitting down.
‘Never?’ she raises her eyebrows.
Draco shakes his head.
‘Would you like to borrow my copy?’ Hermione asks.
‘What’s the story about?’ Draco asks.
‘It’s about a man who’s a fugitive and after having been a prisoner and stealing things he meets this priest, who’s really nice to him and takes care of him, and there he decides he wants to be a better man and that’s what he does. He becomes a better man, helps people, saves a girl from a horrible family, raises her and in the meantime a policeman is looking for him, literally hunting him down, the girl he raised falls in love etcetera.’ Hermione says.
‘It’s set around the 1800’s and it’s in France.’ Hermione tells him.
Draco nods.
‘Can I see it?’ he asks holding his hand out for her.
She gives him the book and looks at him as he reads the back.
‘Is it written by a muggle?’ he asks.
‘Yep.’
‘That explains why I never heard of it.’ Draco shrugs, taking in the cover before flipping through the pages.
‘Would you like to read it?’
‘Sure, that would be another step closer to getting to know Hermione Jean Granger.’ Draco says.
‘Since when do you know my middle name?’
‘A bird told me.’
‘You saw it in the book, didn’t you?’
‘I might have.’ Draco says.
Hermione chuckles.
‘Smooth.’
‘Don’t you want to finish it first?’ Draco asks offering her the book back.
‘Oh no, I’ve read it a hundred times.’ Hermione smiles.
‘Is this your favourite?’ Draco asks looking up at her.
Hermione nods.
‘It actually is.’ she smiles.
‘High expectations now.’ Draco says.
‘You won’t be disappointed.’ Hermione says.
‘And if you like it, I might have something else you could read.’ Hermione says.
‘What?’
‘First finish that one, and then we’ll talk further.’ she smirks.
‘Not fair!’ Draco exclaims.
‘But I’ve got to go.’ Hermione says getting up from her seat.
‘Where to?’
‘Just somewhere.’
‘Black Lake?’
‘Black Lake.’ Hermione chuckles.
‘Would you like some company?’ he asks.
Hermione raises her eyebrows.
‘Erm, sure.’ she says.
They both make their way out of the common room, downstairs, out of the castle and up to the bench in front of the Black Lake.
‘So this is what you do every single day?’ Draco asks looking out over the surface of the lake.
‘Pretty much.’
‘Sometimes you just have to take some time to work on yourself.’ Hermione says.
‘And I’ve picked these moments to do so.’
‘Why would you need to work on yourself?’
‘Everyone needs to work on themselves. Even the people who look all sorted and punctual.’ Hermione smiles looking down at her feet.
‘Nobody is perfect you know.’ Hermione says.
‘Some people come close though.’ Draco says.
Hermione looks up at him, knowing there is coming a “look at me”.
‘I mean, look at yourself.’ Draco says.
Hermione raises her eyebrows.
‘This might be the first nice thing you’ve said to me, ever!’ Hermione exclaims.
‘Where’s the fire whiskey? Let’s celebrate!’ Draco says.
Hermione laughs.
‘You know Malfoy,  you’re not that bad.’ Hermione smiles.
‘You know Granger, you’re not that bad either.’ Draco winks.
‘Well thank you.’ Hermione says.
‘You’re very welcome.’
Hermione looks up and sees the sun has already half disappeared behind the surface of the water.
‘It’s so beautiful.’ Hermione smiles not looking away from the sunset.
‘It really is.’ Draco says looking at Hermione.
‘It really is.’ he whispers before turning to look at the sunset.
