"The note isn't for me."
I tightened my grip on my towel and looked at the piece of paper confused. "Bucky? What is it?"
"I think it's better if you read it yourself." He kept speaking in this emotionless tone, leading me to believe he had already read it.
"Buck..." I shook my head. "I don't want anything to do with it." I don't know why, but knowing that someone in Hydra wrote a note after kidnapping Bucky... it chilled me to my bone. This was horrifying.
Bucky placed the note in my lap and walked silently to the chair by my desk. I sighed and lifted the paper. "Did you ball it up?"
Bucky nodded. "I was going to throw it out. But I decided to give it to you anyway." He sighed. "I think you should read it."
I flattened it up, the writing in the front said my full name.
Talia Irina Aimilios
I took a deep breath and opened the paper.
I know this is the name you go by now, but you should know your proper name. Your name that was given at birth.
Emma Sofia Zola.
I stopped reading and looked up at Bucky. He was staring at the ground. My heart was pounding as I kept reading.
I have always wanted to meet you, my sister.
"What?!" I yelled as I kept reading. I saw Bucky flinch out of the corner of my eye.
I'm sure this is a shock to you. You were taken, many years ago. When mother looked for you, she discovered the Widows. At that point, there was no way we could have saved you. But we never lost hope of your return.
You are the daughter of Liam and Jet Zola. Granddaughter to Layla and Arnim Zola.
I read that three times before looking up at Bucky. "Is this true?" Tears were beginning to blur my vision. None of this made any sense.
"I don't know." Bucky replied. His eyes still trained on the ceiling. "I didn't know he had a family. But I wouldn't know."
I felt like I couldn't breathe. The room felt small. But I needed to keep reading.
The Avengers you follow may pretend to be your family, they are not your blood. I am. Our father is dead but our mother is not.
This will not be the last time we have contact.
Hannah Zola
"I... I need air." I threw the letter on the ground and ran out of my room. I kept my hand tight on my towel. I ran past Sam in the hallway and he called after me but I couldn't stop. I couldn't breathe. My brain was spinning, everything felt blurred and my chest felt like it was going to explode at any minute. I made it to the roof and froze once I felt the breeze.
I tried to focus myself. Breathe in. Hold. Breathe out. I walked to the wall and sat down against it, still holding my towel. I was still crying, I hadn't even noticed the tears still coming out. Shortly after, Steve and Bucky walked through the doors I just ran through. The looked around until Steve saw me curled up against the wall. I saw him nudge Bucky and they walked to me, sitting on the ground on either side. Steve held the letter in his hand. Great.
"My family is hydra." I said, breathlessly. I still felt like my chest was fuller to the brim with anxiety. "Everything I know about myself is a lie." I was a part of the widow program. I thought the worst of my past had been handled. Gone. Exterminated.
It hadn't.
