Morning rays hit Bondita's face and she slowly wakes up. She looks around and sees the room. She sees a different atmosphere and sits up with a jerk. Her head pains and she groans. She remembers everything and tears fill her eyes. She gets up and hears a knock. She opens the door and sees a man, aged almost the same as his father, standing. He looked like the caretaker of the house. He had few bags in his hands. He introduces himself," Choti Malkin, humara naam hai Bihari" . Bondita giggles on his way of speaking. He looks down in embarrassment and Bondita stops laughing. He hands over the bag to her and says," Yeh Badi Malkin ne bheja hai, kaha hai, aaj bashi biye ki rasam hai, aap pehen le ise. Isme kuch bhari sari aur gehne hai, aapki pasand ke anusar pehen le." She nods and takes the bags.
She sits on the couch and looks at the bags. She wonders what will be her husband's reaction. What if he denies to perform rituals. Nevertheless she goes to have a bath, she comes out draped in one of the sarees given to her. She takes the lightest jewellery from among them and wears it. She sighs and puts Sindoor in her maang. She combs her hair puts it in a loose bun and that very moment Anirudh storms in his room. He holds Bondita's elbow and turns her around sharply. Due to this movement her bun opens and her hair scatter down her head. Anirudh gets mesmerized seeing her. Her open hair, doe shaped eyes, chubby cheeks and that cute pout she formed. He stays at the same position without blinking his eyes. Bondita looks at him in amazement and tries to struggle out from his grip. It breaks Anirudh's reverie and he tightenes his hold on her elbow and pulls Bondita closer. He says," Jitna bhi sajna hai, saj lo, mai koi bhi rasm nhi karunga. Jaa raha hu mai." He storms out of the room and Bondita looks at him with glassy eyes.
She goes downstairs and Trilochan adores her. Shubra notices that she has worn the lightest jewellery from the ones that she had given. All three go to the temple. She touches their feet and they bless her with a slight smile. Shubhra says," Choti Bahu, chalo aarti karo, aaj tumhara pehla din hai." Bondita nods and sits down for the preparations. Trilochan and Shubhra keep an eye on her and gets impressed by her arrangements. She stands up with the pooja plate and looks at back. She looks around. Trilochan notices her and says," Kya hua Bahu? Aarti shuru karo." Bondita says meekly," Kaka Sasurji, baki sab toh nhi aaye abhi tak?" Trilochan sighs and says," Nahi aayenge sab, vilayti khayal wale hai sab ke sab. Tum aarti shuru karo." Bondita nods and does the arti. Kaka and Shubhra smile looking at each other. She turns back and sees everybody present. Everybody had came out today listening to the new voice. She gave prasad to Shubhra, Trilochan, Batuk and Som. She goes towards Binoy and gives him the prasad. She bends down to take his blessings. He steps back and avert his eyes. Bondita feels hurt. Her eyes were looking for her husband who was nowhere to be seen.
She proceeds to the kitchen with Shubhra. Shubhra faces her and says,"Ab jo mai tumhe bataungi, woh tum dhyaan se sunogi, mai firse nhi bataungi. Tumhare Kaka Sasurji, yani Lochan Da, chai pite hai, unhe madhumeh hai toh chini nhi; Tumhare Sasurji, English tea pite hai; Tumhare devar, Som aur Batuk, Coco Doodh pite hai; Tumhare pati, yani Anirudh, Coffee pite hai. Mai bahar jaa rahi hu rasm ki taiyaari karne. Tum dhyaan rakhna." She was about to go but Bondita asks," Aur maa, mera matlab sasumaa kya pasand karti hai?" Shubhra stops in her tracks. For the first time ever, somebody had asked her what she likes. It has always been about the males of the family. She turns and sees Bondita slapping her forehead, maybe on calling her maa without her permission.
She goes near her and says," Maa wo hi piyegi joh uski beti piyegi". Saying this she leaves the room. Bondita's eyes gets glassy on hearing her. She feels the warmth she missed return back slowly. She made coffee, English tea, tea and Coco milk. She made Masala tea for her maa and herself. She makes some light naashta and takes it to the table.
Everybody was sitting there except for Anirudh. She serves the English Tea to Binoy, the Tea to Trilochan and Coco Milk to Som and Batuk. They all had it without any expressions. Trilochan had a content smile on his face and he says," Shubhra, aaj chai kuch alag hai, kya dala hai isme?" Shubhra looks at Bondita and Bondita stutters and says," Maa ne bataya aapko madhumeh hai, toh maine chai mai chini ki jagah gud daal diya, jisse aap mithi chai bhi pi sakte hai, aur aapki tabiyat bhi thik rahegi. Maaf kar dijiyega." Trilochan smiles wide and says," Achha kiya Bahu, bohot dino se meetha nhi chakha tha, ab ham bhi mithi chai pi payenge." Bondita gives a weak smile and Anirudh comes to the table.
He gives a look to Bondita which reflected pure hatred which didn't go well with Shubhra. Shubhra gave him the coffee and came and stood beside Bondita. Anirudh says,"Maa aaj coffee achhi bani hai, bilkul wesi jaise hume London mai milti thi." Shubhra was about to tell him when Bondita held her hand and signalled her requesting not to tell him.
She said to Shubhra," Sasumaa aap baithiye na, mai apki chai laati hu." Shubhra says," Nahi beta, sabka ho jaye, fir mai leti hu." Bondita says," esa kyu? Aap baithiye na, aaram se chai pijiye sabke saath, mai hu na dhyaan rakhne ke liye." Everybody looked at them, Shubhra had never sat with them to have tea. Anirudh unknowingly smiled at the duo. Shubhra sits down and Bondita rushes to get her tea. She serves her and Bondita steps back. Shubhra says," Kaha jaa rahi ho beti? Aao hamare saath, maine kaha tha na maa wohi piyegi joh beti piyegi, par beti ke saath hi." Bondita looked hesitant but Shubhra pulled her near her. They both sat together and Shubhra served her tea. Bondita looked at her with pure adoration. Kaka instructs Bondita to go and get ready for the bashi biye rasam. Bondita looks at Anirudh who storms out of the house.
