I came home a little earlier than usual, and with much less to do. I work as a high-school English teacher and have taught at the same school for about 10 years, maybe more, I started to lose count after the second year. This year, most of my classes have passed both of the first quarters, so I only have a few exams to grade before the semester ends.
I locked my apartment door and turned on the security system before taking off my shoes in the small entrance way. Right past the entrance is a kitchenette filling up the rest of the right side of the room, as the door is almost against the left wall. I set my lunch bag of the island counter separating the kitchen from the small living space. I flopped onto the couch against the wall and turned on the television on the other-side of the room.
I quickly made my way to my friends Disney+ account she's been letting me use since she moved out a few years ago. "Maybe I should start a series. Like WandaVision or something?" I mumbled to myself, scrolling through the streaming service. Then my eyes landed on the now almost memorized movie. "Or... I can watch Encanto again? I do have Dos Oruguitas stuck in my head again..." I said with a small smirk.
As I clicked on the movie for the hundredth time this week, my phone started ringing. I checked the contact to see the exact friend who gave me the account log-in calling me. "Aye! Did you hear?" My friend, Rosemary Gray, said excitedly into the phone.
"No... what are you talking about?" I asked, letting the movie continue playing as I walked to my small balcony just beside the couch. As I looked up to the sky the stars twinkled back at me, despite the city lights shining down on the dark streets.
"There's shooting stars tonight! They aren't supposed to happen for like... years from now! It's rare for it to happen randomly!" She said excitedly. I could hear rustling in the background as she was probably getting her kids around for bed. "Once I get these two to sleep, Vincent and I are going to have a picnic under them. Do you wanna come over or something?" I thought about it for a second as I listened to her corralling her twin children into their room to get them to bed.
I waited till I heard the creak of the door close before I answered. "I think I'm going to stay home. You two need to have a little romantic night for yourselves. Plus," I looked back at the movie playing and noticed We Don't Talk About Bruno was playing, it was the beginning of Dolores' solo. "I think I'd rather just watch Encanto and grade these exams."
"You and that movie." She jokingly tsked at me and lightly giggled. "I'll let you go then, the star shower is in about a hour from now. I'll call you in the morning after I wake up Thyme and Parsley." We said our goodbyes and hung up the phone. I locked up my balcony door while finally releasing a small laugh.
"I still can't believe she actually named her kids after spices. At least they're pretty named ones." I opened the curtains and laid down facing the large glass doors. I watched the movie as the few tests set out on my table lay untouched.
As the movie continued, stars started to streak the sky. I glanced from them to my favourite character in the entirety of Encanto. Bruno Madrigal. "I wish," I sighed and wrapped myself up more on the couch, restarting the movie so the songs would play as I slept. "I wish Bruno was in my life right now..." I whispered as I drifted off.
I tried to make this first chapter a little longer, but I'm grateful for the turnout currently. I'm so excited to flush out this prompt!!!
