Hyunjin had been excited for his birthday weeks beforehand already. Celebrating the day he was born had a special meaning to the dancer as it meant people showing him the appreciated him in their lives. For someone as worried about losing people as Hyunjin was, the day showed him, those people who celebrated him wouldn't leave him behind. He was always eager to celebrate his birthday, craving the reassurance it brought over anything. Presents also didn't matter but he could never go without a special birthday hug from his friends, he needed them to tell him how happy they were that he was born and how they hoped to celebrate together for many years to come. Hyunjin didn't always show it but he was deeply insecure, always doubting whether people actually cared about him or just pretended to. Small gestures like remembering his birthday, helped him see the people who were really in his life because they cared. Waiting for his special day made him giddy, so Hyunjin struggled to sleep the night before. His eyes were trained on the clock as he lay awake. Witnessing the clock strike midnight, a smile spread on his lips and he wished himself a happy birthday before rolling over and trying to at least sleep a little.

Stray Kids knew that Hyunjin was always more than excited for his birthday, although they didn't know why. They found it adorable and wanted to make his special day memorable, therefore they couldn't celebrate it like they usually did as that would be pretty boring. Instead, they planned to throw him a surprise party. The members had gotten the presents weeks ahead already and with their now separated dorms, Felix could bake the cake and keep it at their dorm without Hyunjin finding it. They did the same thing with the decoration, storing all of it in the other dorm and making up excuses why their friend couldn't come over. The plan was to pretend to have forgotten their friend's birthday and later lead him over to the other dorm, where everything would be decorated and a cake on the table. Knowing the dancer was a little, they had also gotten him a few presents that would satisfy his little-side and to know which were which, they had wrapped the littlegear items in lavender wrapping paper and the other presents in light blue wrapping paper.

As the dancer's special day came closer, the members started to decorate the other dorm. Of course, Hyunjin could tell that something was going on over there but was never allowed to visit, which made him feel excluded from whatever fun stuff they were doing. It sparked the boy's anxiety about being unwanted by his group of friends as they frequently brushed him off when he asked if they could do something together or if he could tag along when they went to the other dorm. They just didn't seem to want his company at all and it hurt. Hyunjin needed his birthday more than ever to reassure him they still cared about him and that he was welcome in their little family.

The day before his birthday, the preparations were still ongoing and everyone except for Hyunjin was over at the dorm the maknae-line shared with Minho. Hyunjin had asked multiple times whether he could come along but was denied, so he spent the evening all by himself. Knowing, he wouldn't be able to sleep, the dancer had passed the time with movies but had to realize it wasn't nearly as much fun to watch movies by oneself as it was watching them with his friends. Eventually, he went to bed, hoping to wake up to his members congratulating him. They'd have a day off, so they should be able to have a big birthday breakfast, which was the only thing really comforting to Hyunjin as he felt left behind by his members. After watching the clock strike midnight and seeing it was now officially his birthday, the dancer finally went to sleep.

The previous night had been a little stressful as the members rushed to hang up balloons and garlands, setting up candles and preparing snacks for the following day. They wanted Hyunjin's surprise birthday party to be special. 3racha only went back to their own dorm around two in the morning and by that time, their dormmate was already asleep. Considering he was the first member to go to bed, Hyunjin also woke up first but stayed in bed to give his friends the chance to wake him. After two hours of playing games on his phone and listening to his friends shuffling around the dorm, he started to grow hungry. The other three had already been up for a while but none of the other members were over yet and it also didn't seem like they'd come to 'wake' Hyunjin anytime soon, so he eventually rolled out of bed and headed to the kitchen. The dancer felt disappointed when he exited his room and had to realize the dorm looked like it always did, not a single balloon in sight. In the kitchen, he ran into Jisung, who had just poured himself a bowl of cereal. "Good morning", the rapper greeted, plopping into his seat at the dining table. Still half-asleep, he didn't notice Hyunjin's pained expression and started to eat.
