It had been months since it happened, since the event that would affect them all. It wasn't his death that affected them, it was the books, the messages he left, and... his ghost. His ghost was nothing like him. He was strong, confident, and fearless.
Not even the entire server going against him would make him run away and cower in fear. His ghost was the opposite. The ghost was constantly on edge, doubted himself, and panicked the second he was touched. The books revealed what happened to make the ghost like that, and it unfortunately made sense.
Dream's death was something people used to say would be good, saying it would make the server peaceful. The conflicts only continued after he was revealed to have died. After finding the books and seeing footage of it all, the fighting died down.
There was no doubt Dream wasn't lying in his books, there was no choice but to believe it. They met his ghost weeks after they found out he died. Phil didn't say where he found Dream's ghost, only stating that he did and that the ghost wasn't okay.
Techno had been the first to talk to him, being one of the only people the ghost seemed to remember. After a while of questioning why that could be, he came to the conclusion that it was probably because he had been in the prison for a little while. Phil knew bits and pieces of what happened in the prison based on what Techno said, both during a breakdown after a supposed nightmare and what he explained to the entire group. And prime, it was terrible.
The intentional lack of food, the chains they'd put on Dream when he tried to jump in the lava again, the heat, the very little water. And that was just the prison itself, he had heard tiny bits of what Sam and Quackity would do.
He had cried about how Dream would spend hours curled up in a corner, his feet burning slowly while he held himself as far away from the cell's opening as he could. How the only times he saw Dream sleeping were when he passed out from the heat, dehydration or any number of other things. About the empty look in his eyes when Sam or Quackity would come into the cell and when they'd leave. About how he couldn't get his friend's screams out of his head.
They had locked Sam and Quackity up in the prison, though they didn't treat the new prisoners like Dream was treated. That was inhumane and nobody deserved it, not even those two. Although it was difficult to convince everyone of that.
They eventually got around to getting them both to confess and tell everyone what they did, everything that they did. The younger members of the server were kept away, nobody wanting them to hear the details.
Techno went to listen, only because he was told that if either of them lied, he was allowed to hit them and if they didn't confess, he could kill them. He was their lie detector in a way, he knew more than anyone else. They also kept the books handy, so they could look through those as well. Techno brought his pickaxe rather than anything else, knowing it would remind at least Quackity of what he could and would do. Besides, he knew it would hurt.
Sam was the quickest to say anything, at first claiming he did nothing but his job. Though, after seeing Techno's face, he changed his story and told the truth, explaining what he did as basically as he could. He hesitantly went into details after he was told to. "I hurt him." He muttered at first, looking down. "Yeah, no shit. Tell us exactly what you did." Sam clenched his fists, taking a deep breath before starting to explain what he did exactly. He started with the beatings that he'd give Dream, knowing it was the most humane thing he did to the prisoner.
Sam looked down at Dream, fighting the urge to laugh at how weak the man had become. "Get your foot off of me, you asshole.." Dream glared up at Sam, only to have the foot on his chest press down. Sam removed his foot and kicked Dream in the side, causing him to wince. The warden of the prison pushed Dream onto his stomach, kicking him in the back over, and over again. "You have some nerve acting as though you're in charge." Sam huffed, slamming his foot into Dream's back once more, causing the blonde to cry out in pain.
He grabbed Dream by the hair, pulling him up only to throw him to the side. "Let this be a lesson to you. Being disobedient will only get you hurt."
Sam was as specific as he could be, only recalling one time he only did that. He looked up and saw everyone waiting for him to continue, knowing that wasn't all. He continued, explaining a time where he broke Dream's arm because he hadn't listened to him.
Sam crossed his arms when he walked into the cell, shaking his head. "I warned you, did I not?" He walked towards where Dream was chained to the wall. He had kept jumping into the lava and it was getting extremely annoying. Sam grabbed one of his arms, holding it tightly. "Being disobedient only gets you-" He snapped Dream's arm, the blonde tensing up and trying to get away. "-hurt." He finished, grabbing Dream's chin and making the blonde look at him. "If it weren't for everyone else, I'd kill you right here, right now."
He kept going on about different things he did, only pausing when he got to the last thing. He explained how he'd stabbed a sword clean through his hand to keep him still, how he'd snapped Dream's leg in half. How he'd held Dream's hand in the lava until he almost died. He explained it all, described it all. He went through each incident of every act he could remember. "Go on. Tell them the rest." Techno held his pickaxe to Sam's throat.
Sam walked into the cell with a fuzzy mind, thoughts and ideas popping up into his head. Dream had been misbehaving again, but Sam wasn't going to stab him or break his arm or do anything like that this time. No, he had a different plan. And he knew he was going to enjoy it. Dream had his arms crossed as he rose an eyebrow at Sam.
