The ninja attacker was thrown back against the nearest table behind them. The diners screamed and scrambled as the lights came up. The ninjas were revealed.
Indy tipped over the table sending it rolling against one of the ninjas. The ninja jumped it, swinging. Indy ducked, and slugged him across the midsection.
Emily was taking on three ninjas. She reached out, pulled one from attacking her father and slammed him against a second ninja. Her foot stepped backward and the high heel came down raking one of the ninja's legs. He howled at the pain of a shattered knee cap. A backhand knocked him out.
There was a blur of motion. A dark leather jacket next to Emily's blind side.
"Dr. Jones!" a young man cried.
Emily dropped her fist, backhanding the guy in the midsection. A hook punch threw him across the table, past Indy.
"Dr. Jones!" he started again.
Indy turned - watching the Asian man in his mid forties flip over the table and spill onto the floor. The man was wearing a black leather jacket and baseball cap. Indy's memories flickered. Their eyes locked.
"Dad!" Emily yelled.
A ninja attempted a chopping motion at Indy's head. Indy ducked, grabbing the ninja's arm, knocking him off balance. The mystery man scrambled out from behind the table, throwing a flying kick.
The ninja dodged the kick. The young man came back with his fists up, throwing punches at the air.
Indy pivoted searching for his attackers. There was only the young man. "Do I know you, kid?"A ninja rushed them, blades spinning. Indy rolled his eyes, reaching for the pistol. He was about to fire when a high heel shoe flew by his face and knocked the ninja flat.
Emily had two more ninjas, and was missing a shoe. She grabbed the other off her foot and used it to block one of the ninja's swords.
"Dr. Jones!" the mystery man tried to get Indy's attention. He rushed one of the ninjas, fighting beside Emily. Emily decked him.
One of the ninjas hit her in the ribs. Emily stumbled backward, colliding with Indy. "Dip me!"
Indy obeyed, falling into a dance move. Emily's long leg went up, delivering a kick. She followed it with a second, pivoting in Indy's arms - knocking the ninja out the window. Indy drew her back to him, grinning. "Spin?"
Emily spun out, letting go of Indy's hand. The final ninja threw a punch. Emily echoed her father's grin, turning her face into it. His fist collided with her jaw.
"I'll get him Dr. Jones!" The mystery man scrambled up, as the ninja howled.
"And that is why you never hit women," Emily chided, to the ninjas on the floor.
"Dr. Jones!"
Emily was about to knock the mystery man flat.
Recognition flooded Indy's mind. It had been nearly twenty-five years. Shanghai. 1935.
"Dr. Jones!" he pointed. "There's more of them coming!"
Emily's fist was in mid flight.
Indy caught it at the elbow, swinging Emily around. "Don't hit Shorty!"
"What?"
Indy grabbed his whip, rushing for the shattered window. He threw it, watching the whip wrap on the flag pole. "Go!"
"Dad!"
"Dr. Jones!"
"Go! Both of you!" Indy ordered, shoving Emily forward.
"Who is this guy?" Emily protested. "Dad! I'm not leaving you!"
The man called Shorty rushed Emily, swinging her into his arms and out the window.
"Put me down!" Emily roared, fists and legs swinging.
He obeyed dropping her onto an awning. She slipped off the edge, hung on with her fingertips and gracefully landed to the sidewalk, as the man plunged through the canvas crashing in a heap.
She had his pistol drawn and in his face. "Who are you?"
"Wan Li. Most people call me Short Round. Or Shorty. I'm Dr. Jones' bodyguard."
Emily burst into laughter. "Dad? Bodyguard?"
He rolled out of the firing line of her pistol and bolted down the street.
"Some bodyguard!" Emily called after him, holstering her weapon.
Indy swung out over the balcony hanging on his whip, the flagpole bending under his weight, as ninjas scurried out the side of the building behind him.
A taxi fishtailed and swung onto the sidewalk.
"Get in!" Shorty ordered, one hand on the wheel.
"No!" Emily yelled back as if arguing with a sibling.
Indy dropped feet first onto the hood of taxi, rolling up his whip. "Shorty - your driving has not improved."
"At least I can reach the pedals! This time!"
"Dad - you really know this guy?" Emily stared at the man who was about twenty years older than her, fists still clenched.
"Yep. I'll explain in the car." Indy hustled Emily into the passenger side, and got into the backseat.
"Hang onto your potatoes, Dr. Jones! And... Dr. Jones!"
Shorty hammered the gas pedal and with a jerking screech they were bolting away.
