Indy rushed into the supply hanger giving as many orders to save lives as he could. He could see that many of the soldiers were boys to his forty plus years and this was their first war.
"Get on the plane! Get on the planes!" Indy ordered trying to help them make sense to the chaos. "Get as many as you can off the island!"
They needed a father. And Indy was the only dad on the island. He grabbed dynamite from inside one of the quartermaster's offices, his mind mentally searching their back trail for places to set off an explosion.
"Sorry, Marion," he whispered. "Annie - I love you and your mother." He took the jeep, forcing the engine toward the edge of the camp. There was one narrow spot in the valley.
"Dr. Jones!" Ross yelled, scrambling alongside the jeep. "Captain wants you back at HQ."
"There's a narrow pass - if we dynamite it we might buy some time!" Indy yelled.
"We don't have time!" Ross pointed.
There were figures moving through the tall tundra grass, just starting to crest the mountain.
Indy winced. "Get in Ross!"
Ross jumped, landing in the jeep. Indy turned it back to the base.
Ross was speaking. "Kuzmin's got a flight waiting." He pointed across the base. "Wheel's up, ASAP."
"Tell that to the Imperial Japanese," Indy muttered. "Ross, light the dynamite and start tossing it out on the important buildings."
Ross pulled out his cigarette lighter. "That would be the radio office, and supplies."
"Great. We'll detour through there and leave the other buildings standing." Indy shifted gears through the muddy streets, as the Japanese surrounded the base.
An explosion rocked the base. Indy pressed the jeep's gas pedal harder. The mud slowed them down.
Kuzmin waited just ahead, the propeller on the aircraft spinning, bomb bay doors in the plane's underbelly open and waiting.
Ross tossed the last bit of dynamite over his shoulder. The Japanese were running through the valley. "Gettin' hot here, Dr. Jones!"
"You're tellin' me?" A bullet grazed Indy's hat and hit the windshield.
Indy slammed the brakes and rushed for the plane.
"Dr. Jones!" Kuzmin called.
"Here! With Ross!" Indy looked around. "Where's Seal Child?"
"I thought he was with you!" Ross and Kuzmin stared at Indy.
Indy rushed through the plane. Kuzmin sat in the cockpit. They could all see the Japanese coming into the base.
Suddenly someone was waving from a rooftop.
"Seal Child!" All the men cried.
Indy looked around the base. "I can't drive back." He glanced at Kuzmin. "How steady can you fly this?"
"Mother was a crop duster," Kuzmin replied. "Steady and smooth all the way!"
"Take off, circle around, keep it low and steady." Indy's eyes were bright, his hand resting on his whip. "I've got an idea... its crazy, but we're not leaving that kid!"
