"Shorty!" Indy called, raising his voice.

The young man flinched.

"Shorty," Indy saw it and adjusted his tone to the one he used on his granddaughter, Laurel's nightmares. "Shorty, look at me. Do your best to look at me."

Shorty nodded and blinked. "Ok."

"What year is it?"

"1960."

"How old are you?"

"Thirty-five, sir." He swallowed. "Are you gonna slap me?"

Indy's face slackened in shock. "No, Shorty. You can tell me your age and the year - but you're not there. You're just a ten year old kid, stuck in a cult - with a crazy archaeologist. I've been doin' this wrong."

"What do you mean?" Emily asked.

"When we are in fear, we go back to the age we first received that reason to be afraid," Lizavet answered.

Emily's eyes widened and she clenched her fists and jaws in fury. "That's why they took me back to the tomb! They wanted me to be out of my mind with fear!"

"That is what they do," Lizavet answered. "The Knowing Ones tried to recruit me when I was a small girl and multiple times since then. I did not join them. I will not ever join them. They steal humanity."

"What do you mean, 'they steal humanity'?" Emily asked.

Lizavet swallowed. "They cannot be us, so they take the things that make us human. Feelings, emotions, free will, empathy and the ability to love from the heart...they do not care that the decisions we make have consequences and they live to be heartless. They believe themselves to be superior... and will pass these beliefs to their host."

"Host?" Indy echoed, feeling the memories from the Temple of Doom creep in.

"Yes. Or am I not using the proper English?" Lizavet gave Indy a small smile.

"I'd say its a little too accurate," Indy replied. "So how do we defeat them?"

"You can't. They're spirit beings. You can't hit them or punch them."

Indy paused. "I have."

Lizavet stared at Indiana Jones. "Then, if you are not a treasure guardian, you must be like me... a shaman or high priest."

"Furthest from," Indy replied. "Although the apkallu keep trying to recruit me into those roles."

"But we can take out Edo and his physically present ninja goons, right?" Emily asked.

"The Knowing Ones will hear any plans that you think or speak of them - telling Edo and his second in command Chiba," Lizavet warned.

Emily grinned at Indy, slipping her hands out of the cuffs. "Well then... its a good thing we make stuff up as we go."
