Hearing the shot profane the silence, Emily and Shorty rushed back.

Indy was staring into the darkness, holding his pistol. The barrel was smoking.

"Dad!" Emily slid down the hill beside him. "Dad! What happened?"

"Bastard," Indy growled. "That bastard spirit threatened you!"

Emily looked around. "Dad... what did you see?"

Indy sat down in the grass, suddenly weary. "Em... I don't know. It was there and then it wasn't. And... we have to leave. We need to leave. Get in the plane and leave. There's something horribly wrong with this land... it feels... haunted. Cursed. Something evil and forbidden lives here."

Shorty head up his cigarette lighter. "Something was here... the grass is dead."

Emily leaned close. "Smells like... brimstone and rotten flesh." She was about to touch it. Indy jerked her hand away.

"I don't know what we're dealing with here," he growled. "But I've never been in a place like this."

Emily swallowed. "Dad, I've never seen you like this."

"I have," Shorty whispered. "We were at the cult... you were drugged and creatures were coming out of the walls..."

"Bugs?" Indy asked, remembering a different trap.

"No. They were like shadows. They were gathering to watch the sacrifice." Shorty swallowed. "I saw them. I saw a lot more than you, Indy."
