The tires spun, as the jeep fought for traction. Indy struggled with the wheels, gently shifting, bullets flying over their heads. Edo was behind them screaming orders in Japanese.
"Why aren't we dead?" Seal Child asked, as the jeep bucked.
Indy shifted the jeep, gears grinding. Water splashed up - ice cold. Ross hung on. They bolted across the creek, fish tailing in the gravely mud.
Indy continued to shift through the gears as the jeep continued across the mountain through the tall grass. "Ross?"
"Here, sir."
"Do you hear anything?"
"Not from base," he replied.
Indy cursed quietly. "Then they're either dead - or don't know what's coming."
They crested the hill. Ross was in the front seat with the binoculars. "Looks like everything's ok."
"Then why didn't they answer?" Indy wondered.
"Did they evacuate the island?" Seal Child asked.
"No. Planes are still here," Ross answered. "Uh-oh. We've got company - land and sea."
"Then we've got to get as many men and supplies in the air as possible," Indy turned the jeep toward the tarmac.
"How long do you think we have?"
"Five - ten minutes," Indy shrugged.
"Drop me off at the base," Ross decided. "I'll warn everyone."
Indy hit the brakes, skidding in the mud. Ross jumped from the jeep rushing into one of the barracks, yelling.
Seal Child looked at Indy. "That man? How did you know him?"
"I've been a lot of places, Seal Child," Indy answered. "Places I probably shouldn't have been. And those are places where you meet people like him."
"What's he do?"
"He's... he knows things. Things he shouldn't know."
"Like what?"
"Things about the future." Indy shifted gears, lifting the boy out of the jeep, as the base came to life. Soldiers, sailors and pilots raced by them, manning weapons, readying planes. Officers shouted orders. Indy looked around.
The Russian pilot Kuzmin was translating the officer's orders to the other Russian pilots. Both men raced beside each other as American and Russian troops obeyed, relying on their instincts and training to lead them into battle.
Indy checked his watch as the officer rushed up to them. Seal Child was hanging onto his other wrist.
"How much time do we have, Dr. Jones?"
"Less than five minutes," Indy answered. "Don't bother trying to hold the island. You don't want to mess with the Japanese. Their culture views surrender as cowardice."
Kuzmin glanced at the young officer. "I have seen this as well."
The officer took a breath. "I can't give that order."
"Then save as many lives as you can," Indy replied. "Get these boys home to their families. Load them up. Ship them out. You won't be able to hold the island."
The officer nodded. "Kuzmin, time to change tactics."
"Kuzmin, take Seal Child," Indy ordered. "Get him and the swords to safety."
"You should be going with them," Kuzmin told Indy. "You are not in uniform."
"They'll want me alive." Indy looked at his belt where he'd hung the swords. "I went up to the barrow. Came back with the swords. They want them."
Kuzmin eyed the blades. "Japanese Katana swords will not stop bullets. And they will have no problem taking them off your cold body."
"Right." Indy paused. "I'll see you at the plane. I'm gonna grab some dynamite and see if we can't take a few of our surprise visitors out of commission."
