Mountain Above Edo's Camp
Kamchatka Wilderness
Soviet Russia
1960
Emily and Shorty waited on the hillside, just outside the camp. "What are they waiting for?"
"Looks like a standoff," Shorty answered. "This is trouble. Can you see into the other realm?"
"What? No."
Shorty paused. "I saw the apkallu when I was younger in the Temple of Doom. Don't want to ever see that again."
"Is that why you were frozen to the spot when I yelled at you to help me pull Dad out of the lava pit?"
"Yeah. They were trying to tell me that I was ten years old and couldn't escape the Temple of Doom," He shrugged his still cuffed shoulders and hands. "I can't help you much with these on either."
It was a hint for Emily to unlock the cuffs using a hairpin - but Emily, like her father, ignored the obvious and went for the more dramatic and destructive option.
She pulled the dynamite from Shorty's pocket and the dynamite bandolier from around his neck. "I'm not waiting around. Let's light this place up like the side of hell that it is."
"Miss Jones! I can't help you while tied up!"
Emily buckled the bandolier across her body. "Then wait here," she grinned over the light of her cigarette lighter, her hands and pockets full of dynamite like most women carry flowers.
Shorty plunked to the ground. "When Indy talked about adventuring for fortune and glory, I didn't think it would include a daughter who throws dynamite like bouquets at a wedding!"
Emily grinned back at Shorty, her father's crooked grin echoing across her face. "Neither did Dad. But -" She lit a stick of dynamite with utter glee. "SURPRISE!"
