Canyon of the Crescent Moon
Middle East
1960
They'd ridden into the secretive canyon on horses the first time, in 1938... Indiana Jones, Sallah, Marcus Brody and Indy's father, Professor Henry Jones Senior... riding through the canyon, finding the Holy Grail...
Indy watched the shadows on the walls of the ancient treasury, the last bits of sunset gleaming like gold on the red rose stone. He grinned slightly, remembering good times. Behind him, Emily and Shorty waited on camels. Shorty looked a bit seasick - the ships of the desert weren't for everyone. Emily's camel was enjoying an ear scratch, because she could make friends with any animal. He grinned at them. Equally good times. Not in the same ways... but maybe better.
"I'm gonna have a look around," Indy announced, taking the lantern from his camel's saddle bag.
"What are we doing here?" Shorty asked, uneasy.
"Keep supper in you," Emily replied, wiping filthy camel earwax on her jeans. "Should I make a fire, Dad?"
"Don't think so," Indy mused, walking toward the ancient building carved out of the rock. One of the pillars was still fallen and the setting sun made the building gleam a nearly rose gold. Carved pillars lined the outside with a second story set of windows over looking the canyon entry.
Indy held the lantern high in the dying light and called out, "Dad? ...Dad! You home?"
A figure flickered up - portly, armed with an umbrella and took a swing.
Indy jumped backward, ducking and blocking the umbrella with his cast encased arm.
A surprised face came into the lantern's glow. "Junior! What are you doing here?"
"Coming to see you, Dad!" Indy answered. "Why are you attacking me with an umbrella?"
"The sword needed sharpening," Professor Henry Jones Senior replied. "Besides Junior, I never know what kind of dastardly fiends are behind you!"
Emily moved from behind Indy's shoulders, vaulting a downed pillar in graceful silhouette. "Hi, Grandpa!"
"Emmaline!" Professor Jones cried, hugging her.
Indy sighed. "She gets a hug - I get clobbered with an umbrella?!"
"I am the cute one," Emily grinned.
"Who's the sickly boy?" Professor Jones asked.
Shorty's expression flickered slightly. "Sorry, sir. Motion sickness by camel."
"Dad - this is Wan Li, or Shorty," Indy introduced them. "He picked my pocket in 1935 while I was in China, and I adopted him for a short time."
"Ah! So you do have a son!" Professor Jones gripped Shorty's hand. "I was afraid you were Emmaline's boyfriend."
Emily made a vomiting noise.
Shorty stared at her. "I'm not that awful looking!"
"She doesn't have a boyfriend," Indy admitted, grinning at Emily. "She's smarter than that, Dad."
"Hush, Junior. Let the young lady speak for herself." Professor Jones waited.
Emily grinned mysteriously, thickening the plot. "I thought I might have someone... but I threw him face first into a sewer. The other one... I kind of... walked out a window on him..."
"One at a time, dear girl!" Professor Jones beamed, ushering them into the main room of the ancient ruin. He grinned, leaning forward on his umbrella. "Do tell!"
