The woman pointed at her blazer pocket. "Who is that?" she said. Becky reached into her pocket and pulled out the blue perfume she had picked up in her mother's closet the previous day, now shinning even brighter than before. Becky was fascinated by its glow.
"You have a Genie in your pocket" she said.
Becky looked again at the perfume then looked back at the woman who had already gone back to shuffling her deck of tarot cards. She behaved as though she had never called Becky over and Becky had never appeared before her. With a side eye, Becky carefully placed the perfume back in her pocket as she had now concluded that this woman was likely unstable. She sneaked off deeper into the market to browse the stalls.
It was nearly time to meet Freen and Becky's heart began to race. She headed towards the garden to wait. When the time was exactly 9pm a woman appeared from around the corner gathering eyes to her. It was Freen.
Freen looked even more beautiful that day than Becky had seen her before. It had only been a day since they last saw each other but their attraction was still undeniable. It felt like they were center stage and everyone else was an audience member.
Noticing a flurry of eyes on her, Freen guided Becky to the back of the open garden with her hand placed firmly on Becky's lower back. Becky felt a tingle on her skin the moment Freen made contact with her. She tried to steady her nerves reminding herself that she was just a fling and that she was not special to Freen.
Freen guided Becky to the back of the garden where only trickles of light could reach. It was dark and Freen could barely see Becky's face. She grabbed Becky and pulled her towards her intending to pull her into the narrow trickle of light but ended up pulling Becky into an embrace.
They stared at each other for a few seconds that felt like an eternity. In their stare they began undressing each others skepticism and confusion. When they held eye contact it was as if they understood exactly how they felt about each other.
Feeling flustered, Freen stepped back to give Becky some space. The shy side of Freen had reappeared. We hadn't seen this Freen since Saturday evening when she and Becky spoke for hours. Freen did not feel in control of herself in the way she was used to and she did not like it.
"Hi." Freen said
"Hi." Becky responded
They both looked and sounded stiff for the first time with each other. "How are you?" Becky asked.
Freen carried her face up in an attempt to gather her courage. "I've been good" she said exhaling. Freen noticed that Becky was smiling and so began to smile back. Becky realising this, sobered her expression, "what did you want to clarify?" Becky asked.
Freen paused for a moment and remembered why she had come. She needed to sleep, she hadn't been able to sleep for two nights.
"Are you a Mermaid?" Freen asked
"Uh?" Becky asked
"Urmm.. are..are you a Mermaid? Or Siren? Whatever" Freen mumbled averting her eyes.
Becky could feel Freen was trying desperately not to lock eyes with her again but didn't understand why.
"You mean like the fish?!" Becky clarified
"Yes" Freen confirmed
Becky's expression dropped. "Are you mocking me?" She said
"No! What! No! Don't be angry!" Freen replied
"I'm not angry, I'm trying to understand. Why do you think I'm a mermaid?" Becky asked
"Because you're in my dreams and on my mind" Freen explained
Becky was confused, "is that a pick up line? Is she trying to flirt with me?" Becky thought. Becky was unsure what to think. She knew there was a possibility that Freen was making fun of her but her heart did not allow her to succumb to that fear. She decided to be brave.
Becky took a step towards Freen closing the gap between them once more. She placed her hand on Freens hand, looked her dead in the eyes and boldly said, "Are you flirting with me Freen?".
Freen allowed Becky's words to sit for a moment while she looked into Becky's eyes. Freen began to sweat, her heart began to race and her breath began to shallow. In panic, Freen knocked Becky's hand away just like she did that Sunday morning when she kicked Becky out. This time Becky was the one who shuddered remembering the pain of it. "LEAVE ME ALONE!!" Freen shouted at the top of her voice.
Becky took a step back in shock at the strong reaction. Becky had heard her loud and clear.
"HEY!"
Someone shouted from across the garden.
