The Friday of Chen's engagement barbecue was finally here. Ma was in the kitchen and had been since early in the morning. Chen was as good as family to us since he had lost his mother and father at 18. Mum used to cook him meals and he slept over often.
"Richie when is he going to be here?" Ma said
"He should be outside any moment" Richie replied
Just like clockwork Chen walked through the door which was wide open. Behind him was his pregnant fiancé.
"Everything looks great! Thank you!" Chen said
"Since when did you have to thank me? Put these plates on the table." Ma said helping Malaia to a seat.
Chen had just placed the plates on the table when he caught sight of Becky struggling to hang up a garland. He grabbed a chair, climbed up and held the other side.
"P'Chen, sit down! This is your party" Becky said
"Oh you don't need the help? ok." Chen mused
When they were done Chen hugged Becky tightly and for a long time. Just then, Freen and Noey walked through the door and her eyes were instantly fixed on Becky who was stuck in Chen's embrace. Becky had not yet noticed Freen but Richie welcomed her in.
"How are You feeling Nuu?" Chen said
"Oh I'm fine. I'm guessing Richie told you I was sick?" Becky said
"Yes he said it was pretty serious" Chen said
"Oh yeah it was for a while but I'm better now." Becky said
"I'm happy to hear that" Chen said
"Your going to be a dad. I can't believe it. I hope Aunty Beck will be allowed to take Nuu out sometimes" Becky said
"That's a given." Chen said
Richie grabbed Becky by the elbow.
"Urmm Becky, did you invite P'Freen?" Richie said
"No... she's here?" Becky said turning around.
"Becky! How are you?" Noey said
"Freen. You're here." Becky exclaimed
"Hi, I hope you don't mind. I came with Noey." Freen said
"Of course not" Becky said
Chen walked over to join the conversation.
"Ah yes, Noey is actually one of my students older siblings, we've been talking a lot recently." Chen said
"Noey's my old boss" Becky said
"Noey's my best friend" Freen said
Richie looked around.
"Urrmmm. Nice to meet you Khun Noey" Richie said
"Call me Phi. You too Richie. I've seen you pick Becky up a few times." Noey said
"Small world I guess" Richie said
Everyone laughed nervously
"How are you feeling?" Noey asked
"I'm good, thanks Noey. How's the faculty? Surviving without me?" Becky said
"Surprisingly, but are you doing okay?" Noey said
Chen looked at Noey and blinked their eyes suspiciously.
Freen also stared at Noey puzzled.
"I'm great." Becky said
"Becky, can I talk to you?" Freen said
"Yes of course." Becky said
"Yes, Noey I Need to speak to you too." Chen said
"Yup sure" Noey replied
Freen and Becky went out into the garden and sat on the swing.
"Freen..." Becky started
"I know about your Da and the Mukhtar." Freen interrupted
"I know. Richie told me." Becky said
"I know about Marlin too." Freen said
"What?" Becky replied
"I know about genies" Freen said
Becky was shocked.
"So you knew what the essence was?" Becky asked
"No, I didn't know anything at that time. My father gave it to me the day he was killed. My grandmother only recently told me it was a family heirloom and that it was a genie essence." Freen said
"Oh, wow. Your family had a piece of Marlin? but how did they get it?" Becky asked
"No idea." Freen replied
"My Ma said that Marlin was stolen from us centuries ago. Maybe your family..." Becky said
"Maybe." Freen said
"That must have been a long time ago though so." Becky said
"Yeah..." Freen said
They sat in silence rationalising everything.
"Is that all you wanted to talk about?" Becky asked
"Oh, also, my grandmother went to university with yours. They started MonSam together. It wasn't called that back then but..." Freen said
"Really?" Becky asked
"Yeah." Freen said
"Small world." Freen and Becky said in unison.
They both sat awkwardly looking down until Freen's gaze floated over to Becky's dress.
"You must have been a Queen in your past life" Freen said
"Why?" Becky giggled
"You always look amazing in dresses. Especially with your hair up." Freen said now gazing reluctantly into Becky's eyes
Becky blushed and smiled. In that moment she knew Freen was flirting with her but could feel the hesitation in her heart.
"Hey Freen." Becky said
"What's going on with you and Heidi?" Becky boldly asked

A loud noise came from inside the house followed by chaotic screams.
