Before leaving for the day Becky went down to make herself a cup of coffee to go. While waiting for the coffee to brew she checked for letters addressed to her in the stack on the dining table. She saw her full name 'Rebecca Armstrong' on a letter poking out of the side. As she reached to grab it, Richie came barrelling into the kitchen and snatched the pile of letters away.

"Urm... I was looking at that" Becky said
"Oh, you don't have any letters, I checked already" Richie explained
"Oh... okay..." Becky responded, though she was aware Richie was lying.

Richie had been acting weird since Monday. And Becky was well aware of that but she wanted to respect his privacy. Not wanting to pry she went to pour the coffee into her to go flask. Becky left the house with a duffle bag slung across her body and the flask in her hand.

When Becky arrived at the university, Baitoey was already waiting for her. Baitoey had made her a cup of coffee just the way she liked it but quickly realised she already had one in hand. You could say Becky knew that Baitoey had a crush on her but didn't pay it too much mind.

Becky had just met Baitoey and with all that was going on she hadn't given Baitoey much thought. Baitoey knew she liked Becky the moment she met her for the first time that Monday. Baitoey was a beautiful, tall and intelligent woman and anyone would have been lucky to be liked by Baitoey but Becky was still raw from the rejection she received from Freen.

Baitoey, Lux and Becky worked hard putting together an exciting list of theories to test with their students the following week and you could tell they found a lot of joy in what they did. Becky especially was worryingly invested. Her eyes lit up when she explained a hypothesis and she got serious when performing the experiments. Baitoey found that incredibly cute.

"I'm going home to wash up before the fundraiser tonight. I'll see you guys soon" Lux said leaving Becky and Baitoey alone in the lab.

Baitoey got up to make another coffee. "Do you want one?" She asked Becky. "Yes, Caram..." Becky started but before she could finish Baitoey said "Caramel Latte right? Oat milk?"
"Uh, yeah" Becky confirmed

Baitoey walked over to the kettle and filled it up. She carefully measured the coffee beans precisely. "You're good at this" Becky said.
"Yeah, I worked at a coffee shop all through university. My family owns one." Baitoey replied.
"Oh really? You went to UoB as well right?" Becky asked
"Yup, I'm a legacy alumni, my whole family went here" Baitoey confirmed
"Oh nice, so your whole family lives in Bangkok?" Becky asked
"Yes, I can't get away from them" Baitoey mused

"Lucky you" Becky responded
"You're close to your family?" Baitoey asked
"Very" Becky said firmly

"I love that." Baitoey said
The coffee was ready. Baitoey carefully picked up both cups and offered one to Becky.
"Thank you" Becky said
Baitoey had drawn a heart in Becky's coffee, Becky smiled innocently.

"What are your family like?" Baitoey continued
Becky began to feel uncomfortable. She had just opened up to someone and gotten hurt.
"They're great." She said in an attempt to keep the conversation light.
Becky was worried about her brother, she was also concerned about her Ma and missed her Da terribly but she couldn't open up to a complete stranger again.

There was a long silence. But Baitoey was great at reading the mood. She let Becky lead the conversation from then onwards which was very considerate of her.

"So your family's coffee shop is here in Bangkok?" Becky asked
"Kind of." Baitoey answered with a smile
"What's it called?" Becky questioned
"Roots" Baitoey confirmed

Becky paused, "Bangkok is full of rich kids huh" she thought
"You mean the coffee chain Roots?" Becky asked
"Uh yeah" Baitoey replied embarrassed

Becky finished her cup of coffee and looked at her watch.
"I should get changed, thanks for the coffee. I guess I owe you a cup of coffee now?" Becky said
"I'll hold you to that" Baitoey smiled.

Becky grabbed her duffle bag and headed into the shower rooms. She smiled sheepishly. Baitoey was a very kind person and it felt nice to be treated with kindness.

When Becky entered the main hall all eyes were on her. She was wearing a red dress showing off her slender frame and toned arms. Her hair was partly pinned up with the back down covering her back. She was wearing simple diamond earrings and natural make up with a red lip stick. She maintained a modest beauty but she was glowing tonight.

The room was already filled with numerous guests and old alumni Becky had never seen before. She scanned the room for a familiar face as she felt a little self conscious standing there on her own. She spotted Baitoey and made her way over to her.

-TING TING TING-
A clinking sound filled the room. Noey, the department head had taken the stage and was stood behind the mic tapping his champagne glass.

"Thank you all for coming tonight to our annual Bright Futures fundraiser. Remember attendance isn't free! Make sure you hand over your donations at the back." Noey started.

The crowd laughed, they were used to Noey's carefree and comedic personality.

Noey continued, "Now, before we start the auction, a word from a dear friend of mine and the founder of this very building, Freen Chankimha!"
