El and Max have been dating for months, in fact, I think it's their first anniversary tomorrow. Their relationship was going amazing, they always went on dates, sometimes double dates or even triple dates with the party too. They were always there for each other and supported each other no matter what.

The two girls were the power couple in school, and people admired the way their personalities fit together so well.

El was happy for once, she had finally met someone who made her feel safe. Hopper and Joyce had gotten married the previous summer and she wanted her and Max to be just like that. She smiled whenever she heard her name, and she glowed whenever Max was there with her.

Well, that was until a couple weeks ago.

The night Billy died.

He got into a fatal car crash, killing him instantly. Max was completely heartbroken, Billy was the perfect brother. He cheered her up whenever she was upset, he helped her on her first day of school, he was Max's role model. But that fucking drunk driver ruined it, and it couldn't ever be fixed.

I mean, the driver got a sentence of 8 years for drunk driving, but 8 years wasn't equal to the lifetime Max had to endure without him.

And it's really taken a toll on her. She's colder towards everyone, especially El. All she does is stay in her room, barely leaving unless it's to shower or go to school. She never jokes anymore, she's not sarcastic anymore. She's just... numb.

El's tried her best to help Max through this rough time. She knows what it's like to lose someone, even though she hasn't really liked anyone she's lost, she still tries her best. She helps Max eat, helps her fall asleep, and helps her try and stay as positive as she can.

But she's only 14, and she's struggling having to look after herself as well as her girlfriend too. She would never say it out loud, but she's having a hard time too.

Will knows this, but every time he asks El just says the same thing. "Others are struggling more."

That doesn't make her feelings any less valid, but she never listens when Will explains that to her. Hopper and Joyce know El's trying her best, and they always try to cheer her up if they get home before she falls asleep, exhausted, which is getting rarer and rarer these days.

It's Friday today, and their anniversary is Saturday. El's saved up for movie tickets for the two of them before planning a big sleepover with everyone. Max always seems happier when everyone's there rather than just her, but it's their anniversary, so it wouldn't be bad to just watch a movie alone right?

Anyway, Hopper and Joyce agreed to the sleepover, they're having it at the cabin. She's been so excited for it ever since she Joyce told her about anniversaries. Plus, it's gonna be her first one! How special is that?

She woke up at 4 am like she has for the past couple weeks. She quietly showered and got ready for school until she looked at the clock and saw it was 6. Shit! Guess there's no time to make eggos.

She grabbed her bag and rushed outside, then she got on her bike and rode to Max's house. Every morning she wakes up early so she has enough time to get ready herself before helping Max with whatever she needs that morning.

Also in case you were wondering, El's keeping the anniversary plans a secret from Max. She's told everyone to meet up at the cabin at a certain time before surprising her. Maybe Max would smile, smile because of her for once.

You see, Max does smile. And they're genuine smiles too. But lately she hasn't been smiling at El's silly behaviour, her funny jokes, or even at her in general.
