El's POV:
Max and I were chilling in her room, I was braiding her hair while she was humming to music. I noticed her staring at me from the mirror.
I smiled, "What?" I asked.
She chuckled, "Nothing. Just looking at your pretty face is all." I blushed and she laughed even more.

A couple minutes later, I had just finished the braid when Max's house phone started to ring. "I'll get it." I said, climbing off the bed and heading to the living room.

Max's mum was at work, so we were home alone anyway. I picked it up and put it to my ear. "Hello?" I asked.
"El? It's me, Joyce."
"Oh! Hey Joyce, everything alright?"
"Kind of. Hopper and I have been talking for a while and we reckon it'd be best if we take you and the boys to California."
"A holiday?" I asked, winter break is in 2 weeks, so why is she telling me now?
"Um... no. We're moving there."

Shock raced through my body as I stayed silent for a couple seconds. What the hell?

"Why?" I asked slowly.
"We all need a fresh start, and I've been offered a good paying job." She answered, sounding quite upset as well.
"Well, can't I stay?"
"Hopper's coming with us too, I'm so sorry sweetheart, but you have to come."
"Oh."

I heard mumbles from the other side of the phone and Hopper spoke. "Hey kid. I'm sorry you had to find out like this. I'm coming to pick you up in 30 minutes, your bags are already packed."
So soon? Why do I have to leave?

I sniffed, not being able to get any words out. "I know you're upset kid, I'll give you time to say bye to who you need to." He hung up and I put the phone back on the wall.

Slowly I made my way back to Max's room, dreading the conversation we're about to have. How am I meant to tell her?

Once she saw me, she smiled. "Who was it?" She asked.
"Joyce... and Hopper."
"Oh, what did they say? Are you okay?" She asked, her face filled with concern.
"They said we're moving." I answered.
"You, Will and Jonathan?" She asked. I nodded.
"Cool! Did she finally get the house opposite the skatepark? Oh my god it'll be so fun decorating your new roo-"
"They said we're moving to California." I answered, my heart falling as I saw her smile fade.

"...what?" She asked quietly.
I sat down on her bed as she looked at me, eyes wide. "I'm so sorry Max."
"Did you only just find out?" She asked.
I nodded and shuffled closer to her. "They said they wanted a fresh start."
"So... when are you leaving?" She mumbled, I could tell she was trying to act strong.
"Today. Hopper's already packed my bags."

Tears filled her eyes immediately and my heart broke. "I love you." I said, lacing my fingers in hers.
"Prove it!" She said, almost desperately. "Stay." She finished, her voice barely over a whisper.
I looked away as tears threatened to leave my eyes, "I can't." I said quietly.

"But- we have so many things planned together El! What about the theme park huh? Your first rollercoaster?" Tears stained her cheeks as they slowly fell.
"Listen." I said, cupping her face as I wiped her tears with my thumb, "I promise I'll come back. We'll go the theme park, we'll go everywhere okay? It's just, I don't want you to wait for me." I began.

She looked at me, "What are you saying?"
I sighed as I struggled to keep my tears in, "I think we should break up."
Her eyes widened, "What? Why?" She asked.
"We're gonna be hundreds of miles away from each other. And I don't know how long I'll be gone for. So I want you to continue living your life... and I want you to find someone else."
"But you're everything I want El. I wanna be with you, not anyone else." Max said.
