In love with you

Max and El were in playground after school, feeling rather bored. El swung mindlessly on the swings as Max just sat on the see-saw a few metres away, her head in her hands as she just thought.

She loved these moments with her best friend, but lately she's been feeling like her actual feelings towards her are getting in the way of what they used to have. Max has been too afraid to get too close, just in case El would notice her blush, which has almost happened already a couple of times.

El sighed through her nose, breaking Max away from her mind. She slowed herself on the swing until she came to a full stop, lifting her head to look at Max rather than the ground.

"You've been acting off lately." She spoke.
Max looked at her, thoughts racing in her mind. What should she say? What can she even say to that, 'oh, it's because I'm in love with you and I don't know how to tell you?', how stupid. Wait... is this a chance for her to confess? Maybe it'd be better once the truth is just out there.

"I think it's because I'm in love with you." She confessed, her heart dropping to her stomach as she heard herself.

What the fuck was she thinking?!

"Very funny." El replied flatly, trying to act unamused despite the faint red on her cheeks exposing her.
"Why? Did I almost get you?" Max said, smiling.
"No."
"Awwh, are you blushing?" She teased, standing up and sitting on the swing beside her.
"Stop it." El said, hiding her face as the setting sun cast a shadow over the two.

"You're the one who won't look at me." Max reminded her, a smile still on her lips.
"That's because you're hard to look at."
"Are you calling me ugly?" She joked.

El frowned and looked at her, "See, now you're just putting words in my mouth. Why would I want to look at you?"
"Oh please, just admit you love looking at me. Stop being so stubborn."
"...you're terrible."
"And you're terribly in love with me."

"You're really enjoying this, aren't you?" El asked.
"I can't say I'm not." Max shrugged.
"I don't know how you can just, easily say those kind of things." She said, glancing down at her feet as she swung ever so slightly.
"What if I'm saying it... because it's true?" The red head tried, seeing if she would understand.

El looked back up at her, her eyebrows furrowed. "The boys must had a hard time dealing with you." She said playfully.
"You're the only one I'm like this with."
"So, what? You're really in love with me?" El joked.
"Absolutely head over heels." Max smiled, swinging in sync with her.

"Wait, come off the swing for a second." El said, jumping off hers. Max did as she was told and walked towards El who was a few paces ahead. "You don't mind if I do this?" She asked, lacing their fingers together.
"What? Holding my hand? Obviously not." Max replied, rolling her eyes despite the furious blush on her face.

"Are you blushing?" El asked, a small smile on her face.
"What, no...! That's ridiculous."
"Funny how you talk so confidently for someone who can't do the same things they tease me with." She said, her smile growing with every sentence.
"Now you're terrible." Max answered, the blush slowly fading as she calmed down.

"Were you actually being serious though?" El asked, suddenly calm.
"100% serious." Max replied genuinely, "So..." She hesitated, "Would you like to be my girlfriend?"
The girl grinned, a sight which warmed Max's heart. "Yes, of cour-!"

Max cut her off by placing a gentle kiss on her lips, doubt biting at her to pull away until she felt El kissing back. The doubt immediately faded into nothingness and instead she smiled, wanting to savour this moment after dreaming of it for many weeks now. Luckily they'd have many more now.
