Hurting me

Lately El had been feeling like Max had been avoiding her in some type of way, whether that be cancelling plans, or simply going over less, it varied. She hadn't said anything yet, just in case she was wrong.

This behaviour had only been happening for a couple weeks, and El was spending a lot of time with homeschooling so it'd make sense if Max wanted to go out and do something more fun.

Finally she had decided to go over and talk to Max about it, so she left her cabin and began the 10 minute walk to the her house.

When she was just outside her driveway, El saw that one girl. Evie, her name was. Evie, a girl who was in Max's grade. El hated her, she wasn't particularly mean, but she was smarter, more popular, prettier, funnier, and just everything El thought she wasn't.

But one thing El hated the most about her was how quick she hit it off with Max. It had taken her a while to become friends with the shorter girl, and yet this random new one managed to basically be best friends after a day together in school.

Evie was on the doorstep of Max's house, hugging her before she left. El noticed Max's arms around her waist, and that wasn't helping calm her worries.

Once the girl was half way down the street, El knocked on Max's door. She opened it a couple seconds later.

"Did you forget somethi- El! Come in!" She smiled, standing to the side as she opened the door a bit wider.

El walked in, a sort of sad look on her face.

"Hey, uh- can we talk?" She asked.
"Of course love, about what?" Max replied, closing the door and sitting on the first step of the staircase behind her.
"I was coming over and I saw you and that girl get all touchy again." El said, fiddling with her fingers slightly.
"Oh, you mean Eve? My school mate?"

She has a nickname?

"Yes, Eve." She began, "What was that? Why were you all clingy and close?"
"We're just good friends, El. Nothing intimate." Max assured.
"I don't think so- forgive me if I'm accusing you but... are you cheating on me?"

Max stood up, a shocked look on her face, "What? Cheat? Why would I ever do that to you, my love?"
"Anyone could cheat and I saw the way you two hugged and it just felt like-"
She chuckled, "It's a hug El, of course we're gonna be close. What do you expe-" She stopped as she saw El's sad eyes. "Forget it, it's nothing serious. Her and I are just good friends."

"Good friends? The way you look at her says otherwise."
"Are you seriously trying to argue with me right now?" Max defended.
"No- no I'm not. I just want to have a talk."
"Well, it doesn't look like a simple talk. To me it's more like you wanna argue over something trivial again."
"You think this is trivial, are you serious?"

"You expect me to be all understanding and forgiving? When I literally watched you being flirty with a friend?!" El shouted.
"For the last time! We are good friends-"

"We were once friends Max! It's always friends first!" El replied.

"Why are you making this difficult for me?!" Max argued.
"Oh, if I'm making it difficult for you, how much more is it for me?!" El replied angrily, "I wake up everyday, and I always see her around here! At this point I doubt your love for me, and I go to sleep wishing I didn't have to feel this way!"

Max stayed silent, not realising any of this.

"I was curious to see if you would at least reassure me and feed me with your lies again but I guess you've changed for the better, huh? You don't lie to me anymore, good job!" El said sarcastically. "Do you even love me at all?"

"Yes, of course I do." Max answered.

"Then why are you hurting me like you don't?"
"El..."
"I think we need to have a break." El said, beginning to walk out.
"Wait-" Max replied, grabbing her arm.
"We need one Max, I'm tired of it all." She sighed.
"Please, El." She pleaded, tightening her grip ever so slightly

"Let me go Max."
"No no no, we can sort this out. Let me sort this out. I'll drop her. I'll drop it all. Please." She begged.
El looked confused, "Huh?"
"I'll drop Evie. I don't wanna lose you El, you're by far the best thing that's ever happened to me. I never knew you were going through all of that because of me and I don't want to make you feel like that again."

"She won't be very happy."
"As long as you're happy, I don't care. She has plenty of other friends." Max replied. "Now come here, let me apologise."

She brought El closer to her and engulfed her in a massive hug, warmth radiating through the both of them. "I'm so sorry love, I didn't know. I promise I'll never hurt you like that again. I'd never even dream of cheating on you Ellie, you're all I've ever wanted. You've been there for me when no one else has, you've seen me at my worst and you make me want to be my best." She apologised, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

El had a small smile on her face, looking at Max. "I love you." She said quietly.
Max grinned, "I love you too, more than anything. Come on, we can relax in my room."

Together they went upstairs, Max happy they had cleared everything up, and El happy she didn't have to worry anymore.
