Max's POV:
I watched El dancing from the other side of the room, the music blasting in my ears as the lights flashed, the party still going strong despite it almost being 3 am. We were at a college party someone in our classes had thrown and although I was here with my new boyfriend, I couldn't help but watch her.El and I had dated all the way through high-school and midway through the first year of college until we had an awful breakup when she had confronted me about being too distant and no longer communicating good enough in person or through text. It was just before exam season so I was stressed out of my mind, not wanting to fuck my results up. Admittedly that did mean I had started an argument for no reason, telling her she was just being paranoid and shouting at her for not trusting me after 5 years of dating and even more years of friendship before that.
She had told me that she did trust me and she never once accused me of cheating, but I still didn't back down and the argument got worse and worse until we didn't talk for days on end. She then came up to me 3 days later crying saying that she wanted to take a break since she didn't want to deal with the stress of our relationship and exams at the same time. I had agreed which I had regretted ever since due to the fact that the break turned into a complete break up when she had seen me flirting with Hayden, my now boyfriend.
I was initially pissed off and just wanted to make her jealous but she was already on the edge with me and had just broken up then and there, leaving me heartbroken. She was the love of my life and I was sure of it, you couldn't just date someone for 5 years and act like they were a stranger to you a day later. I knew everything about her, her favourite smell, her favourite snacks when on her period and how the change when she's not on. I had every feature of hers etched into the back of my mind and I knew every curve of her body by heart.
But I was a dumbass and instead of talking it out with her I had dated Hayden instead, which made matters worse between us. At first we hadn't talked but the second year of college began and I had enough of acting like she was a nobody to me.
So now we were friends, sort of. I didn't know what we were but what I did know was that I was getting her back whether it be today or on my deathbed.
I heard someone talking and turned to see a girl flirting on Hayden. I wasn't even jealous, if anything I was glad.
Two could play at that game.I rolled my eyes and went into the kitchen, grabbing a cup and filling it with Pepsi, knowing El didn't drink alcohol at parties. I walked over to her side of the room and tapped her shoulder. She turned around, her face relaxing as she saw me.
"Hey." I smiled, "I got you a drink." I said, handing it to her.
She took it, taking a sip before talking to me, "How'd I know you were gonna be here?" She wondered as my smile widened. I glanced down before looking back at her eyes, the eyes I had fallen in love with so many times.
"I guess you just know me too well." I replied, leaning closer, "Don't you?"Our faces were just inches apart and I heard her breath hitch, my eyes moving down to her lips before looking back at her eyes.
"Don't Max." She warned quietly, her eyes following my gaze.
"Don't what?" I asked her, moving my hands to her waist as I pulled her a step closer, "Tell me to leave you alone and I will." I whispered, slowly leaning in closer until our lips brushed together, "Tell me to leave you alone Ellie. Because if we start I won't be able to stop."She didn't reply and set the glass down on the table beside her before running her hands up my chest and around my collar, fixing it. "If we start what?" She asked quietly, her eyes on my lips.
My grip tightened on her waist, "If we go back to what we were. If we cross the 'just friends' line."
"Don't you have a boyfriend?" She teased, moving her hands around my neck.
"Forget him. I only ever talked to him to make you jealous. I don't want him, I don't want anyone but you." I confessed, feeling myself practically melt under her touch as her lips were just a centimetre away.
