Max's POV:
I haven't lived here very long, I only moved from California just a few days ago. Today was my first day at Hawkins High, and I wasn't looking forward to it.I skated down the street, impatient to be back in my warm bed.
I don't understand why we had to move, I had so many friends in California, and a nice home. And now we're in Hawkins, a town no one's ever heard of, on a street full of retired old men.
No kids live near me, but all the ones I've seen near the mall look rather bitchy or full of themselves. And I'm really not in the mood to interact with either.
Anyway, I reached the school with 10 minutes to spare before the first bell, which was actually ideal considering I had to get my timetable and find my classes.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a spot to skip, since there was a teacher right outside the school gates. "Excuse me, are you new?" The old man asked.
I avoided the urge to roll my eyes, and instead nodded. "Yep."
"Very well, follow me into the principal's office." I sighed through my nose and followed him through the car park.I noticed a police truck here, not just any police truck, the chief's truck. Woah. Maybe there's someone actually cool in this school.
Never mind, a girl who looked to be around my age jumped out. She is really pretty though. Probably an asshole.
We entered the school, and the hallways already smelt like teenage boys. Luckily the principal's office was right near the entrance, although that just smelt like very strong cologne.
The teacher abandoned me in there, and the principal smiled, nodding at the seat on the other side of his desk.
I sat down and he looked at his files. "You must be Maxine Mayfield right?" He asked.
"Max. But, yes." I answered.
He looked at me weirdly, "Max?" He asked. "Isn't that a boy's name?"
"I just prefer it to Maxine."I saw him roll his eyes slightly. "Alright then. Here's your timetable for this semester, I shall get you someone to guide you around the school."
"Oh, no I don't nee-"
"El Hopper, please report to my office please." He said in a loud booming voice while pressing a button. He clearly doesn't know the purpose of a microphone.I heard the door open behind me a few seconds later, and I turned to see who it was.
Oh, it was the girl from the police truck.
"Hi!" She said, way too excited for my liking. She immediately grabbed my arm and my timetable before dragging me out the room.
"Uh-" I tried.
"Sorry, I just couldn't stay in there. I absolutely despise the principal, his voice gives me a headache."
I smiled slightly, at least there's something we can relate on. "Well uh, hey."She gave me a warm smile as she let go of me, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" She asked, looking at me.
Umm, what the fuck is she on about? Witches?
I looked behind me, looking to make sure she wasn't talking to someone else. "Who, me?" I asked. "Why, I'm not a witch at all! I'm Maxine Mayfield, from California."
"Oh." She looked confused, "Well is that the witch?" She wondered, nodding to the skateboard in my hand.
"What, this?" I asked, lifting it up slightly, "This is my skateboard." I laughed slightly. She chuckled, "Well the boys told me a new witch had moved here. And there's a new person, and here you are! You're from California?" She asked, her deep brown eyes twinkling.
I was very confused by this girl, but she was amusing either way. "Yes, I suppose I am. But I really don't have a clue what you're talking about! Witches are fictional, they belong in fairytales. They're not real." I giggled."Of course they are! And so the boys want to know, are you a good witch, or a bad witch?"
"But I've already told you! I'm not a witch at all! Witches are old and ugly." I said, remembering all those pictures in books I saw as a young child.Suddenly I heard giggles, and I quickly turned around. "What was that?" I breathed, looking around me.
The girl smiled, "The boys. They're laughing because, I am a witch. I'm El, the witch of Hawkins."I gasped, absolutely amazed by her. A witch in real life? And she looks like that? Woah.
"You are?! I beg your pardon, but... I've never heard of a beautiful witch before!" She blushed and handed me my timetable.
"Only bad witches are ugly. The boys are happy today, because chocolate pudding is being served at lunch. But I am happy simply because there's a new girl in this school! You don't understand how tiring it is just having crazy boys around you all the time!"I smiled, "Well thank you. But if you please, what are the boys?" I heard more giggles, louder this time.
"My friends! You being new means your simply a celebrity to them! It's alright, you may all come out and meet her!"I looked behind me and saw 4 boys walk out the science club.
A tall boy with black hair.
A shorter boy with a bowl cut.
An adorable looking boy with curly hair.
And another boy with a camo bandana on.
They seemed kind, and walked closer. Not too close though, under the kind eyes of this girl.
I turned back to her, "You haven't told me your full name." I said.
"Oh! I'm sorry. My name's Eleven Hopper. My father's Jim Hopper, the police chief. I noticed you looking over earlier."
"Eleven like the number?" I asked, confused.
She giggled, "Yes. My real name's Jane but everyone just calls me Eleven, my nickname's El though.
I smiled, "Cool! My nickname's Max. I think Jane is a pretty name."
"Thank you." She blushed slightly. The boys began to speak.
"My name's Dustin Henderson." The curly haired boy said.
"Mine's Mike Wheeler." The tall boy added.
"Lucas Sinclair." The bandana-wearing boy smiled, putting his hand out for me to shake.
"And Will Byers." The bowlcut boy said, a bit shyly.I shook Lucas' hand, "What makes you a witch?" I asked El.
"Watch." I noticed a small trickle of blood trickle from her nose.
"Oh, you have a nose ble-" I said, but suddenly my skateboard lifted out my hands and hovered in the air. "Woah." I said, standing back a bit.
"You don't have to be afraid, my powers are completely safe. Unless I need to protect Hawkins.""You protect this whole town?" I asked, my voice louder than intended.
She laughed, "I guess so. It's a rare occurrence when I need to, but I have in the past. My friends have helped me though."I turned back to the boys and smiled before jumping at the bell. "Oh shit, I forgot about your lessons!" She said as the boys talked between themselves. "Uhhh, it seems like you have all lessons with us today! English first!"
I felt a hand on my shoulder as we all walked down the hall to our class. "Would you like to hang out after school? We always do, sleepover's on Friday." Lucas explained.
I turned back to El, confused. "Am I part of your group now?" I asked.
"If you'd like to be. I'd most like for you to be a part of it, but you don't have to." She smiled.
"Um, I'll join your group." I said. These people seemed nice, and that's what I needed.
"Yes! You're in our party!" Dustin cheered.
"Come with us to my house later. It's our hangout spot." Mike explained.
"Okay." I shrugged. Sounded better than being bored at home.I guess Hawkins isn't that I expected so far, doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it. I've made 5 friends within 20 minutes, if only that was a scoreboard for that.
