question of the chapter: what do you think lydia and kai's interactions would be like?Lydia swung her feet back and forth over the edge, staring at them though it was hard to see exactly. It was dark outside, and the Salvatore Boarding House didn't exactly have the best lighting as it was surrounded by trees that hung over Lydia and the house. She didn't know how she ended up here on the roof. She was just looking for a quiet place to get away from all of the noise.
Her birthday had been a few days ago, but her friends had been busy. Her and Rae had spent the day together, but everyone else had something they had to be doing. Lydia wasn't surprised. They were all in relationships, except for Damon, and her birthday was Valentine's Day. But Elena suggested that they hold a small dinner party the next weekend. Stefan offered to host, and Lydia agreed. She thought it might be nice to spend some more time with her friends that she didn't get to see often. At the time it was a nice idea, and for the last few hours, it was nice. Stefan had cooked, Caroline baked, Elena brought games, and Damon made drinks. She couldn't have alcohol, but he made surprisingly good mocktails.
But as the night went on, Lydia was overwhelmed by the same feeling that she was on her actual birthday. Dread. As she sit around and watched her friends all laugh and have fun, she realized that she wouldn't have much more of this. Each birthday was a reminder that as time went on, she was one second closer to her own death. While everyone around her was making plans to go to college, she was worried that she wouldn't even be alive by the end of the summer.
"How did you even manage to get up here?" She heard someone say behind her, causing her to shriek and jump in her spot, luckily she didn't move enough to almost fall off of the roof.
"Damon!" Lydia exclaimed, turning her head to see the eldest Salvatore brother. He sat down beside her on the edge."Why are you up here?"
"Well, it is customary for birthday parties to have a guest of honour," Damon answered jokingly."And we couldn't find ours anywhere."
"Oh, sorry," Lydia mumbled sheepishly. She had snuck off without saying a word to anyone. She was on her way back from the bathroom when she almost made it to the living room, heard them all laughing and having fun, and decided to leave. She didn't want to leave permanently, just for a little bit. Besides, everything was so overwhelming. Being around so many people, even if it was a group of her friends, and the noise, the emotions, it was all too much for her. Lydia had never done well in large groups, she didn't know why but they always made her feel overwhelmed.
"Don't apologize," Damon shook his head, taking a sip from his bourbon and handing it to Lydia who just shook her head.
"You know I can't drink," Lydia reminded him. He just shrugged his shoulders and brought his drink back to himself.
