question of the chapter: how do you feel about lydia and kol adopting?

Lydia shifted to sit with her legs crossed underneath her while she leaned against the armrest, smiling a little bit as she looked at the young girl who was currently sitting on the couch, peering out the window and staring at the clouds. They had been in the air now for about forty minutes and Lydia was sure her eyes hadn't moved since they took off.

Lydia wished that she shared her excitement, but ever since they got on the plane she had been filled with nothing but dread. She knew that it was time to go home, and she didn't regret it, but she was nervous. Kol and Lydia had been happy the last few years. They rarely fought and they set good boundaries between them and their family. She was worried that would change when they returned, especially since they didn't have their own place. That would have to be the first thing that they did.

"You look worried," Kol said from beside her, drawing her attention away from the little girl."Is everything alright?"

"It's not a big deal, it's just going home is going to. . ." Lydia trailed off."I'm worried we'll get sucked back into all the drama."

"I know, but we do not have to stay," Kol reminded her."Even if we do not want to travel, we can stay in New York. Or wherever else we both like."

"Maybe," Lydia nodded her head. She wanted to give it a chance because she did miss her family and she wanted to spend more time with them."We can see how it goes."

Kol nodded his head and turned to look at the girl who was still looking out the window in excitement. He turned his attention back to Lydia once he saw she was alright.

"Have you spoken with Caroline?" Kol inquired.

"Yeah, she said to bring her by the school later on," Lydia answered."But I'm gonna stop by Elena first and make sure that she- we can't keep calling her she, Kol. She needs a name."

"She does, but is it up to us to give her one?" Kol asked."What if someone wants to adopt her or-"

"So she just remains nameless until that happens? If it happens?" Lydia raised her eyebrows. Kol shook his head in response. It wasn't a good option."And if not us then who? The school? Caroline? Alaric? That becomes their responsibility? She's not. . . She's not gonna have a home there, Kol. I mean yeah, Caroline's gonna make sure she's alright. She'll be safe, she'll be taught magic, but no one will be looking out for her specifically. Her home will be a single room that she'll probably have to share."

"Perhaps see what Caroline is offering and then we can think of better alternatives," Kol suggested, but they both knew that would be hard. He saw Lydia's point. It wasn't a bad idea to send her to the school. Lydia was right, she'd be safe and taken care of, but she wouldn't a home. She wouldn't be loved there. Or have a family.

Lydia had never been inside Elena's office before. She knew that her sister had gone to medical school, went through the training, and decided to open her own practice in Mystic Falls. But Lydia never saw Elena as a doctor before. She never needed to. She wasn't mortal, she didn't need to see a doctor, but the young girl she brought here did.

Once they landed, they drove to Mystic Falls and went straight to Elena's practice in the town. They didn't know if Kol's siblings were at the manor and didn't want to show up with the child and confuse them and scare her. His family weren't exactly the most welcoming.
