Mark x Jeno x Donghyuck
"I hate sharing you with him."
Jeno snorts. "That's funny, 'cause you used to hate sharing him with me."
Donghyuck sighs, the memories flooding through him. Jeno isn't completely right, but he isn't completely wrong either. Donghyuck had hated sharing Mark with him, not because he wanted Mark all to himself, but because Mark could be stolen. By the other person he was also afraid would be stolen from him.
And he was.
Mark and Jeno have always felt somewhere out of reach, in their own space, locked together without Donghyuck. Donghyuck hates it.
For as long as he can remember, he's been on the outside of whatever his two friends had going on. No matter how they treat him, how much they love him, they love each other more. And Donghyuck loves them more than he's ever willing to admit to himself. Because admitting that would also be admitting how hopeless he is.
Jeno gently nudges Donghyuck to bring him out of his thoughts, but Donghyuck still isn't ready to talk. Not about this, even though he's the one who started it. He knows Jeno will know he's deflecting the conversation and will wanna ask him about it, maybe not right now, but at another time when he thinks Donghyuck's ready. For now, that's fine.
So, he stands up and moves away from Jeno before he does something stupid like hug him and give another wound to his heart. "The sky is pretty."
"Really? Is that all you got?"
"That cloud looks like the ones in SpongeBob."
"Huh?" Jeno squints up at the sky, looking for whatever cloud Donghyuck is talking about. He finds it after a few seconds and nods. He lets his eyes look over the rest of the clouds, deciding to go all into Donghyucks diversion of cloud-watching. He points out another cloud that's vaguely shaped like the head of a dog and looks at Donghyuck, expecting the male to tease him.
Donghyuck doesn't though. It's not because he doesn't see it or think about it, it's because teasing Jeno with his similarities to a dog is Marks thing. Jeno eyes the male in confusion, wondering what's running through his mind to make them act the way he is.
Jeno has never understood this, how Donghyuck can go quiet and make it feel as loud as he is when he speaks. Generally, when it comes to Mark. According to both of them, there was no bloodshed, there wasn't even a fight. There was just talking, and when the talking was over, so were they.
Mark and Donghyuck didn't ask Jeno not to speak of the other around them and they didn't ask if they could avoid each other (though Donghyuck sometimes did it anyways), they'd just been normal. So Jeno making a joke about Donghyuck not wanting to share Mark should've been normal. But nothing with Donghyuck is ever a hundred-percent normal, he supposes. Jeno usually likes the weird. The weird is fun, the weird is loud, the weird brings him out of his shell while keeping him a blanket of comfort.
This is a different kind of weird.
————————————
Mark notices too, but much quicker than Jeno. Maybe because it's more obvious. He's grown used to the silences that accompany Donghyucks self-intervention visits. The ones where he clearly thinks it's been too long and that he should at least attempt maintaining a civil relationship even though he's not sure of how much he actually wants to do it right now. But this silence is different. And his expression is different.
Instead of the constant glances Mark usually gets as Donghyuck sits at the dining table, waiting for him to finish up whatever he's doing, usually accompanied by soft drumming on the table just loud enough for Donghyuck to hear it, so he doesn't disturb him, Donghyuck sits on the couch, staring at the wall like he's tired of whatever he's seeing in front of him.
