James

Regulus has just delivered the worst news to me to come out of this week.
Out of all people I did not want Severus Snape to know about mine and Regulus' relationship.
He was the last person I needed knowing because he definitely will not keep his trap shut about it. I can guarantee you that.
I told Regulus I would deal with it but I have no plan for this whatsoever.
I get to Transfiguration just in time and take my seat next to Sirius at the back. Sirius can see something is up immediately
"You alright, Prongs?"
"Yeah"
"You sure?"
"Not now, Pads, later"
Will I tell him later? Maybe I need to tell Sirius to stop Severus. But Sirius is the one person I was most afraid of finding out. Then again, I would rather I be the one to tell Sirius than him find out from Snivellous, then he really would be mad.
"Mr Potter?" Asks Professor Mcgonnogall
Oh shit. She'd asked me a question and I hadn't been listening.
"Sorry, Professor, could you repeat that please?" I ask
Mcgonnogall looks almost concerned, as misbehaved as I can be I usually am rather good at transfiguration.
"I asked what spell you would use to transfigure an animal into an inanimate object, which you would know if you spent more time paying attention and less time daydreaming"
"Of course, Professor, my sincerest apologies. The spell is feriverto"
"That's correct, Potter, please make sure to pay attention for the rest of the lesson"
"Of course, Professor, won't happen again"
The lesson continues on as normal and eventually comes to an end.
"Potter can you stay behind please" Mcgonnogall asks
"I'll see you after, Pads" I say to Sirius, letting him know I don't need him waiting up for me. He nods and walks on without me. I walk over to Mcgonnogall's desk, my heart racing a mile a minute, I don't have time for this, Snape could be telling everyone right now, but I also hold a special place in my heart for Professor Mcgonnogall.
"Potter, are you alright?" Asks Mcgonnogall
"Yeah" I reply
"You don't seem yourself, are you sure there's nothing going on?"
I pause for a moment "I'm sure"
"I don't appreciate lies, Potter, you know that"
"I know, Professor"
"James, you can tell me anything, I promise you, I'm here to help"
"I don't think you can help this time, Professor"
For some reason, I feel an urge to cry. I was going to tell people about Regulus and I eventually, when the both of us were ready. I'm just so scared of what people will say, what they'll think, what they'll do.
"What makes you say that?" Asks Professor Mcgonnogall
"If I tell you, you need to promise not to intervene until I ask you to"
"I make no such promises, but I'll try my best to see what I can do"
I sigh and rub the back of my neck. "I think Severus Snape is going to out me"
"Out you?"
I sigh again "Okay, erm, Regulus Black and I are...in a relationship and well, Snape found out about it and he threatened to tell everyone"
"Do you want me to talk to him?"
"No. No please don't, that'll make it worse"
"Potter, what Severus is doing is unacceptable, something needs to be done"
"I'll sort it, Professor, I promise I have a plan. If it doesn't work that's where I ask for your help"
"You have a plan?"
It hits me in that moment. I have to tell Sirius.
Whilst he might be mad at me he'd be damned if he lets Severus Snape hurt me or his brother. "I do. I promise"
"James, I hope your plan works"
"So do I, Professor"
I leave her classroom and head for the Gryffindor Common Room in the hopes of finding Sirius.
Thankfully, when I get to the Common Room, Sirius is there. My heart is racing. This is not how I wanted to tell him. I wasn't ready yet. But it's something I have to do. Here goes nothing.
"Hey, Prongs, what did Mcgonnogall want?" Asks Sirius.
"Sirius, I need to talk to you" I say
"Merlin, that's never good, what have I done now?"
"We're better off going to our dorm"
Sirius shows concern but follows me up to our dorm room anyway. Why is this so hard?
"James, what's going on?" Sirius asks, the moment he closes the door.
"I don't know how to say this"
"To say what?"
"I'm in love with your brother"
That is not how I wanted to say it, but that's how it came out.
"What?"
"Regulus and I have been dating since November"
"It's fucking February"
"I know. I was going to tell you, Reg wasn't ready, I didn't want to rush him"
"What happened to Evans? Or are you just dating Reg to pass the time?"
"What? No!"
"Why are you telling me now then, James?"
"Snape knows"
"Snape knows before me are you fucking kidding?"
"No, Sirius, we didn't tell him, he caught us and he's going to tell people"
"What?"
"He's going to out the both of us and I need your help to protect him. I don't care about me really, but Reg wasn't ready for telling people yet. I want to protect him"
"I can't believe you, James, you could have chosen anyone else"
"I didn't plan on it, Sirius, I've been terrified of telling you for this exact reason, I knew you would be mad with me"
"It just makes no sense, you used to hate him"
"It made no sense to me either, but I really do love him"
"Fuck sake, James"
"I'm sorry"
"No, don't you dare be sorry I'm happy Reg has found someone, I'm happy it's you, I know you'll be kind to him. I'm just also mad at you. He's my little brother"
"I know, but Sirius, you need to be mad at me later, we need to stop Severus"
"Right, yeah, you're right"
"I usually am"
"Shut up"
"Right yeah, sorry, you're mad at me I forgot"
Sirius takes a moment to think and then he smiles. Not a regular smile. A smile he only has when he has a prank in mind.
"What have you got in mind"
"We need Moony and Wormy"
"Let's go find them then"
It was not hard to find Remus and Peter, they were in the library which is standard for the both of them.
"Boys, we have a prank to plan" says Sirius
"On who?" Asks Peter
"Snape" replies Sirius
"I'm all for a prank on Snape but why this time?" Asks Remus
"James is shagging Reggie and Snape's gonna tell" Sirius says
"Oh" says Pete
"Sirius you know you just did to James what Severus is threatening to do?" Asks Remus
"Oh shit, sorry, James" says Sirius
I just nod "it's cool they had to know anyway"
"Guys, come to the Black Lake, Severus Snape is saying he has an announcement to make" some random student, who I think is a fifth year, tells us.
I feel sick.
"No time for discussion" Sirius says
We all rush down to the courtyard by the Black Lake. When we arrive there, low and behold, there is a crowd around Severus Snape who is sporting a very smug look, as if he's about to achieve something other than award for the world's biggest dickhead.
"I know you are all eager to hear what I have to say" Snape begins
"My information is to do with Gryffindor's favourite Chaser and Slytherin's favourite Seeker" Snape continues
"Wingardium Leviosa!" Sirius exclaims, pointing his wand at Severus, hoisting him upside down in the air via his ankle
"What the fuck? Put me down!" Demands Severus
"Keep your fat trap shut then!" Shouts Sirius
"It's because of shit like this that I want to tell everyone" Snape snaps
"I'll put you down if you say you won't tell" says Sirius
"I don't have to promise anything" Snape states defiantly
"How would everyone like to see us take off Snivellous' trousers?" I ask
Everyone cheers
"James, what are you doing?" Asks Remus
"Potter don't you dare" Snape shouts, a mixture of anger and fear in his tone.
I flick my wand and his trousers fall to his ankles. Everyone laughs.
"Severus? Are you alright? James! Stop it!" I hear Lily shout
"I don't need help from a filthy mudblood!" Snape exclaims
Both Sirius and I lose our concentration causing Severus to fall to the floor with a thud. Lily runs off with a look of hurt on her face. I did not expect that from him. I mean, I did, but not to Lily.
"What is going on here?" Asks McGonnogall
"You're all supposed to be at lunch! Severus?"
"You should be talking to Potter and Black, Professor"
"All three of you come with me and everyone else go to lunch!" Mcgonnogall demands.
Severus, Sirius and I follow Professor Mcgonnogall to her office.
"Explain to me why the three of you think it's acceptable to cause such a ruckus?" Asks Professor Mcgonnogall
I try to explain, and so does Sirius and Severus, all of us try explaining at the same time.
"Severus you tell me your series of events, then Potter, then Sirius"
So we do. We take turns and soon she gets the full story.
"Now, I will have to say that public humiliation is absolutely unacceptable and Potter and Mr Black will be receiving two weeks detention"
"Only two weeks? I hardly think that's fair!" Severus whines
"Don't you start, Severus, I cannot even begin to tell you how you do not get to dictate what is and is not fair" Mcgonnogall states firmly, turning her full attention to Severus. Severus seems shocked, as though he thought what he was going to do was good.
"Nothing gives you the right to share intimate and personal details about someone else to the entire student body! This is unacceptable behaviour to share such a dire secret. It is not your place to tell. I do not appreciate nor do I tolerate bullying from anyone, not from students in my own house and not from students in any other house. So, for your malice, disruption and quite evident disregard and ignorance you will be attending six weeks worth of detentions"
Severus stares at Mcgonnogall, mouth agape, as though he wished to protest, but no sound was escaping his mouth.
I feel quite satisfied with this punishment, but I daren't show it lest Mcgonnogall give me a harsher punishment for being smug, and she would definitely do that, so for that, I keep my expression neutral.
Severus storms off without a word, deciding it's best if he keeps himself out of trouble and deals with his rage elsewhere.
"Is Regulus okay?" Professor Mcgonnogall asks the moment Severus leaves the room.
"I don't know, Professor" I reply and neither does Sirius. I didn't even really see him in the courtyard
"See to it that he is" Mcgonnogall says before dismissing us.
At the end of the day I go out in search of Regulus.
"Oi, Potter, I didn't know you were gay, what would Evans say?" Asks Troy Donnovan, a fifth year Hufflepuff who I have divination with.
"What?" I ask
"Snape's telling everyone you and Regulus Black have been a thing since last year"
Bastard.
I finally find Regulus down one of the fourth floor corridors.
"Reg, can I talk to you a second?"
"Why can't you just deal with things like a normal person?" Asks Regulus
"What?" I ask
"You just had to pull one of your notorious pranks and now Snape's opened his fat gob and told everyone anyway, he said he already has six weeks of detention because of you, things couldn't get much worse for him so he might as well blab"
"Shit, Reg, I'm so so sorry"
"Yeah well it's a bit late for that now isn't it?"
Regulus walks away, leaving me unsure of what to do or say.
I've really fucked it up this time
