It's 11:00AM
I'm on the Hogwarts Express.
Usually I'm fine going back home but this time it's different.
For me, summer is usually associated with six weeks of school-free homework-free fun.
This year, though, whilst my summer probably will consist of six weeks of school-free homework-free fun, it will also be six boyfriend-less weeks which will suck.
Six whole weeks of no Regulus.
I would see him if I could, but his parents would never allow it, and he's not got Sirius' rebellious spirit, they terrify him, and to be honest, if I were him they'd terrify me too.
Regulus and I are in a compartment alone together, to say our final goodbyes for summer before we go back to our respective carriages before the train pulls up at King's Cross.
"Write to me as much as you can" I say, my hand running through his hair.
"You know I will" Regulus replies "Your letters and our contact is going to be the only thing that gets me through summer, so really, if anything, I should be the one telling you to write as much as you can" Regulus continues, causing a smile to tug at my lips, he's right, I am the one that needs reminding.
"I'll make sure I write a response as soon as I read your letters" I promise
"I would hope so" Regulus replies with a smile, causing me to smile too, his smile is infectious, you can't beat the urge to smile back at him.
"I'm really going to miss you" Regulus confesses. I pull him into me so his head rests on my chest and I place a kiss atop his head.
"I'm really going to miss you too" I admit with a sigh. Summer without him is going to be a challenge.
He pulls back from my chest and looks at me, our eyes locking. "I'll see you in six weeks, mon amor" Regulus says, his hand cupping my cheek.
"I'll see you in six weeks, my love" I reply.
He tilts his head and leans forward, I lean in too, closing the space between us and capturing him in a kiss. The kiss lasts a while, it's not rushed, it's not a lustful kiss, it's a soft, loving one. It's a kiss to last six weeks. It's a kiss that says 'I'll miss you'. It's a kiss with pure meaning.
Eventually we pull away and stand up, deciding we best get back to our respective friendship groups before the train pulls up at King's Cross, which will be soon, otherwise leaving each other will be ten times harder.
"I'll leave first, give it a minute and then you leave and that way we won't try and stall in the hallway" Regulus says.
"You are most definitely the brains of this relationship" I reply, earning a small laugh out of him which makes me smile. His laugh is music to my ears.
I hug him tight for a minute before I finally let him go. I watch him walk out of the train car and I wait a full minute just as he instructed before I too leave the train car.
I return to my car with Remus, Sirius and Peter.
"Are you going to blubber and wail about your boyfriend now, Potter?" Asks Remus
"Absolutely not, I ma not a thirteen year old girl!" I exclaim with a grin
"You sure? When's the last time you checked?" Asks Remus, an equal grin on his face
"Don't test me Lupin" I threaten
"Or what? You'll blast me with a bout of perfume?"
"Christ, Moony you are on a roll today" Sirius comments
"Gotta get it all out before summer, fill you guys with my spirit so you don't miss me too much" Remus replies
"Ever so thoughtful, Moons" I state, rolling my eyes and plonking myself down next to Peter
"We must be close" Peter remarks. He leans up against the window to see if he can see the station. "I see King's Cross! Must be five minutes away now" Peter exclaims.
Soon enough, the train pulls up at King's Cross station and comes to a halt. As it does, bouts of students rise from their seats and soon the train is filled with the sound of footsteps and busy chatter as people grab their bags and try to exit the train all at once. We all wait a few minutes until the hustle and bustle quiets down before we grab our bags, pulling them off of the rack above our heads and then leaving the compartment we were in.
We all say our goodbyes and head our separate ways, Peter to his mum, Remus to the Matron that'll take him back to St Edmunds and Sirius stays with me. Sirius and I both spot Mum and Dad and we head over to them. The moment I'm within arms length of my Mum she engulfs me in a bone-crushing hug. "Hello, Mum" I say, placing a kiss on her cheek after she finally lets me go. "Hello my darling boy" Mum says, beaming at me. She then spots Sirius and he becomes her next hug victim. "Sirius, my dear, how wonderful to see you!" Exclaims Mum, hugging him tightly. I then turn my attention to Dad and greet him with a hug too. "Hello, son! Good to see you" Dad exclaims, patting me on the back. I smile at him "Good to see you too, Dad" I reply. "You boys must be famished, I'll start up dinner the minute we get in" Mum states, already fussing over us. "Let the boys breathe, Effie, they've only just got off the train" Dad tries to rationalise "Oh, nonsense, Monty, I'm sure the boys will appreciate a hearty homemade meal won't you boys?" Asks Mum, to which we both nod to make her happy.
We get the Knight Bus back and when we arrive home, Sirius and I immediately head upstairs to put our trunks in our rooms. "I had a room set up for you, Sirius, darling, it's the spare room next to James', I hope that's alright" Mum states with a warm smile.
"That's perfect, thank you so much, Effie" Sirius replies
"It's no trouble at all, Sweet, as long as you're comfy here" Mum says. Sirius smiles before we continue upstairs.
We throw our trunks onto our beds before heading straight downstairs again. I decide to pull Sirius aside before we head downstairs, I have something to tell him.
"I'm going to tell my parents about Reg" I say
Sirius' eyes widen "Today? Now?" he asks
I nod "I think it'll be good to get it out in the open now, I don't want to keep secrets from them"
"I guess that makes sense"
"Do you think I'm making a good decision?" I can hear the worry in my tone
"Of course, mate, they should know and Reg will be happy to know you feel safe enough to tell them" Sirius reassures me which calms me down slightly.
After fully debriefing my parents on the Hogwarts year ensuring they hear both mine and Sirius' accounts from the year, I decide it's time to tell them about my boyfriend. I can feel my heart pounding against my rib cage and I can feel my palms getting clammy from the nerves. I know they won't make a big deal out of it, but I also am not entirely sure how they'll react, but I need to tell them.
"Mum, Dad, I need to tell you something" I announce.
"You want me to leave, Prongs?" Asks Sirius
I shake my head "No, no, Pads, you can stay" I reply
"What is it, James, dear?" Asks Mum.
I clear my throat and stare down at the table as though my life depends on it "Would- would you still love me if I didn't...if I didn't love girls?" I ask
"Of course we would, sweetheart" Mum replies, I look up at her and her eyebrows are knitted together, she's confused, I can tell.
"Well, I think I might be attracted to both girls...and boys" I continue tentatively
"How can you be sure?" Asks Dad. It wasn't a malicious question, it was a genuine curious question.
"I have a boyfriend" I reply, coming straight out with it instead of continuing to beat around the bush.
"Oh how wonderful! What's his name? How long have you been together? Oh! We must have him round for dinner this summer!" Mum exclaims excitedly. Her reaction melts my heart and eases my anxiety instantly.
"Your Mother is right, son, this is fantastic news, I'm glad you found someone, who's the lucky bloke?" Asks Dad
"Regulus" I reply
"As in Sirius' little brother?" Asks Mum
"Merlin, that was a plot twist I wasn't expecting" Dad adds
"Yes it was a surprise to everyone...including me, but we've been together since November" I reply
"November!? And we're only just finding out?" Asks Mum
"I was trying to find out how to tell you guys, I wasn't sure how you'd react, I was worried you'd be angry that Regulus is a boy and that I didn't have a girlfriend" I admit, turning my attention back to the table.
Mum walks over to me and pulls me to her in a hug. "Oh, my darling boy, we would never ever be mad at you for loving who you love, it's not something you choose, it's something you feel and you can't control that. The only thing your Father and I have ever wanted for you is for you to be happy, regardless of whether that happiness comes from boys, or girls, or even both" Mum explains.
I smile at her as I pull away "Thanks, Mum" I say, feeling ten times better about this entire situation knowing that they accept me for who I am and who I love. The whole coming out thing has been a whole lot easier than I was expecting which has helped ease the anxiety surrounding it massively.
"I suppose having the boyfriend around for dinner isn't going to be easy" Dad comments
"I'm afraid that my parents would never allow it, if they can stop it they will, especially since I'm not there to say no to anymore" Sirius interjects.
"Well, I can send Walburga an owl, no harm in trying I think" Mum replies which seems to settle things.
"Are you two sure you don't mind me staying here all summer?" Asks Sirius, starting a new conversation which I'm quite grateful for, as nice as that was, I would like the atmosphere to return to the way it was.
"Of course not, son, you're welcome here whenever you want for however long you want. I also think we'd have to fight James even if we wanted to send you back, but we don't because we love having you here" Dad replies with a smile.
I can tell my Dad calling Sirius 'son' meant a lot to him because he looked as though he was about to cry. I don't think Sirius realises how loved he is here, but I'm sure that will be made very apparent to him throughout summer.
"Monty is right, dear, you are a delight to have here and we have the room for you which is an added bonus so please do stay for as long as you want we will never limit the time you spend here, our home is your home" Mum adds.
Sirius is now definitely on the verge of tears, which I think is a good queue to head off to bed. "Thank you" is all Sirius can muster as a response
I decide to cut in before Sirius starts blubbering. "Right, it's late, I think we'll head up" I say and Sirius nods, glad for the excuse to head up to bed.
"Yes, I think sleep is a good idea for both of you, you've had a long day of travelling" Mum agrees.
Sirius and I stand up from our seats. I head over to Mum to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek to say goodnight and Sirius says goodnight to Dad, we then switch parents to make sure the both of us says goodnight to both Mum and Dad before we head up to bed.
I would call today a success.
