Scarlett laid there as the obstetrician slid the transducer across the jelly she rubbed onto her stomach. Carter watched silently from his seat, unable to peel his eyes away from his partner's big belly housing their children.
Yes, children. It turns out they're having twins. They found only two weeks ago, making the pregnancy higher risk than it already is. To say that Scarlett wasn't happy would be an understatement, but it eventually tides over into excitement, then back to being stressed about it all.
Carter is trying to be her anchor in these times, although it was weighing down on him too. They haven't stopped going to university upon Scarlett's insistence that she wants to at least finish this year, but he didn't know how she could keep attending classes while growing twins.
He agreed to it only on the terms that, at the very least, they take the semester off once the kids are here. They have a support system and are wealthy enough. They can afford to have helping hands, but she will need to heal and adjust.
''Baby A is a boy and...'' The obstetrician trailed off, trying to decipher the sex of the other one. Scarlett and Carter perked up in anticipation. ''Baby B is a boy too! Congratulations.''
Twin boys. Oh gods.
They're going to be parents of twin boys at twenty.
Carter got up from his chair and walked over to stand next to Scarlett, taking her hand in his. ''How are you feeling?''
Scarlett seemed to be in a daze at the news, her eyes slowly focusing on him. ''I can't believe it.''
He smiles at her adorable confusion, watching as the weight of the reveal settles into her expression. ''I can't either.''
. . .
Snake stands near the stove, watching his boiling pot of food and consistently stirring. Bailey is sat on the couch, texting away on her phone. She then suddenly jumps up. ''They're having twin boys!''
The assassin immediately knows who she's talking about. ''Twins?!''
''Yeah! Apparently, they knew about it already, but they didn't want to tell anyone yet until this appointment.'' Bailey shakes her head. ''But there's no way they didn't tell my parents. They kept it from me. My mom usually runs her mouth about everything.''
He chuckles, lowering the heat down to medium. ''Well, at least we know now. Gods. Twin boys. They're going to be in for it. I told Scarlett that she shouldn't continue with her classes, but she insisted on at least completing the semester.''
''I don't blame her. I'd do the same if I was that close to completing my degree. Besides, they'll have lots of help.'' Bailey turned off her phone and walked over. ''It smells good. I'm excited.''
''It'll be done soon.'' He smiles and covers the pot with a lid. ''It's all so crazy... I would have never imagined her to become a mom so soon. She's only twenty.''
''You know, my mom got pregnant with my brother at seventeen.'' She watches the steam rise from the pot, the enticing savory aroma of food wafting through the air. ''She warned us not to have kids early. But she doesn't regret it now. She said you have more energy to play with your kids when you're young.''
