CARTER MATTHEWS

MONTH: OCTOBER

As I sat at my desk, the lecture of my history teacher was drowned out by the thoughts that occupied my mind. It's been a year since I was kidnapped, yet it feels like I'm still there.

You don't know how good you have it until it's taken away from you. I've lived a privileged life. Unlike many others, I've never had to worry about not having a place to stay for the night or what my next meal would be.

I'd been lucky to never had experience the terrors the world holds. I never had to go through what my family did. They've always tried their best to protect us all from that.

I've always been aware since my powers awoken that I was special. The second elemental in the world. Aria told me horror stories about the dangers she faced simply because of the magic she possessed.

The books in the Water Kingdom's library tell countless tales of how the elemental race was almost completely wiped out. There are stories all across the board about the history and the science behind what makes us so unique.

Fiction is quite different from reality. When you haven't had the experience you're living off of words. It isn't until you are thrown into the fray yourself that you begin to understand danger.

And now I understand. But I wish I didn't. Because when you're constantly waking up in the middle of the night, screaming, panicking with sweat running down your forehead— it makes you wish you weren't alive.

It makes you wish that you could be free of the monster inside your head.

I need to get out of here. I can't keep thinking about this.

My leg bounced anxiously as my ears perked for the sound of my escape. When the bell finally did ring I turned down the hallway that led to the baseball field.

I've never skipped school before. I never did a lot of things, actually.

But it seemed a lot better than staying here.

I could hear the warning bell faintly in the distance as I picked up my pace towards the fence. I wasn't sure if there were any administrators loitering around, but this wasn't the time to find out.

''Hey.''

My heart pounded hard against my chest as I quickly turned around. It wasn't an administrator like I was expecting- but rather, another student.

His name is Robin. That's all I know. We have a few classes together, but we've never talked once. To be fair, neither of us seemed to be the social type.

''Carter, right?''

''Yeah.''

''Where are you gonna go? The park?'' Robin asked curiously. He walked up to my side, throwing his backpack over the other side of the fence.

''I-I don't know. Just anywhere but here.''

Robin didn't say anything. He climbed the fence as if he's done it a million times before, picking up his backpack and heading on his way. I mimicked his actions, following after him.
